M-M U Oil Filter HELP!!!

Hello everyone. I, like everyone else, had trouble finding a cartridge filter for my U. I actually had more trouble than I expected to, which is why I am posting this. My local Big-A store used to keep them on hand, but he ran out and Hastings has obsoleted the number. What I got is a Wix 57511, which is the same as a Fleetguard LF543. It is a sock-type filter. What I am wondering is that since the new one only has the short pipe on one end and the old one had a pipe on both ends, which end goes up and which goes down? Also, it takes a good push down to allow me to get the nut started on the top, is that normal for these style filters?

Charlie, I know if you read this, you're going to tell me to get an adapter from you and convert to a spin-on. I am going to get one from you for next time, but I am kind of pressed for time right now and if I can make this thing work I am going to.

Thanks to everyone
Matt

I recently bought Z and U filters from them, they are the type you are looking for. They are not the sock type.
