Adjusting the brakes

Could someone give me some pointers on how to adujust the brakes on my late 51 ZAU. I pulled the covers off and find there is a hole in the drum. is this used to adjust the brakes or do I need to remove the drum to complete this task.

That is the hole for adjusting the brake shoes. You can use a screw driver but an actual brake adjusting tool works better. You will need to jack up one side to get the hole to the correct position, usually to the back if I remember correctly (about the 8 oclock position for the right side and 4 oclock for the left) funny thing is I cant remember which direction you need to turn it to adjust them....Im sure someone else on here has an idea OR I'll have to get the book.... :)

Thanks for the info. I will work on that tonight so that both brakes engage at the same time. (my right one needs to be pushed down much more then the left)
