Low power 605

The 605 I put in my Gvi is a slug. It's mechanically sound with good compression and oil pressure. Starts and runs great. It has an Impco 200 carb with big regulator and 800 manifolds. Timing is at 30, still using points. I bought this engine from a fellow puller, seemed to run fine for him. I would think it should be over 130 HP, and I'd be surprised if it's making 80. I pulled it tonight in 2nd gear, and I got spanked by a bunch of stock tractors that were all less than 90 HP. Yes, I am running from the liquid valve with the vapor valve off. RPM is set at about 1800. Anybody know why this thing's so weak?

What should total advance be at 1800? Mine is at 30, but I think the advance is locked out. Don't know how to check for the right amount of fuel- previous owner was running it over 3000 rpm, so I should have plenty of fuel for 1800. I would like to verify the fuel mixture under load, but I don't have a PTO to dyno it.

toolz, watched you pull last night. I thought you were in 3rd! Should've done much better than that in 2nd. I never messed/checked with timing at all. When I got it, put a new set of points in it and ran it. Ran 3000 plus most of the time trying to keep up with 800's but with stock cam, extra rpm didn't do much for power or torque. In my opinion only, with that model E regulator and impco 200,fuel shouldn't be a problem. I haven't really studied your plumbing up close. When it was in my tractor I was using a forklift LP tank. I was told there were two sizes of valves with regard to gpm they would flow. I think they were like 1.9 and 3.8 or somehting close to that. My tank had the 3.8 gpm. I assume your using the stock valving and lines on your GVI, I assume those valves flow enough?? I'm not an LP expert. I don't know if some guys run 800 pullers with the stock valves/lines on the MM tractors.

Another thing that's different toolz, is I didn't run a governor and I know you are. That may be a place to start. If you can, run direct linkeage to the carb and if you got a good tach, just drive it with the throttle and if you have more power, then you know where to look. Just a thought.

Hey toolz, I've seen posts and pictures of your Gvi and does it still have those big tires? Are they 23.1 X 26? If the air pressure is too low they would create huge foot print take a ton of power to spin out.

And I'm wondering about the fuel filter, is there good flow coming out of that canister style filter?

Ted- Thanks for the input. I just put new valves on the tank, and they look plenty big. I have a hose hooked up for emergency filling- I'm tempted to hook up a forklift tank along with the main tank and see if it makes any difference. Gotta get this figured out. It just about has to be a fuel restriction somewhere.

pmer- don't think tires are a problem- it just runs out of poop way too early. I was thinking about the filter earlier today. I've had it apart to check the element, but I might just take the element out and try it. The element looks clean, but it's worth a try.

So three guys say timing is the problem, but no suggestions where it should be set at. Mine's locked at 30. Where should it be?

Hey toolz, What kind of a governor are you running on it? Don't remember if the 605"s had the stationary governors on them or not, if so, they don't work like a normal governor on a field tractor, so the direct throttle cable to the carb like Ted said may be the best option. It has been a while since I looked at that engine back when it was in Teds tractor. Although, If LW says timing, I definately would be checking that also. Just a thought, good luck.
Ted, tell your dad I am sorry for not making it up to penfield with the GTBD, we just had too much going on to get up there and put on the pull at Arthur, and some family stuff going on. Maybe next time.

bc- thanks for the suggestions. I do have a tractor governor on it, and it seems to be working fine. Ted was not running a governor, but I can't get by with that in the group I pull with. The manuals I have say timing should be at 27, mine's at 30, but I can't seem to get an opinion on what would be best. I pulled the filter element out last night- it's one of those woven ones and it had some stuff in it. I'm leaving it out this weekend to see if it helps.

It is a little hard to make any recommdations without head numbers. 30 degrees is high for any LPG engine with the right compression for a 605.

Do you have something heavy to drag around at home. Like maybe another tractor with the brakes on or left in first gear.

toolz, did some digging through some notes and I remember Happ telling me to time that thing the same as 504 back when I had it. According to op manual, a 705 LP with 504 should be set at 25 degrees. Might be a good starting point.

Thanks Ted- I'll give that a try. Wouldn't think 5 degrees would make a huge difference, but I'm open to anything. I'll be pulling it again on Sunday, so we'll see.

it should also help to run a k&n filter. the stock filter setups are rather restrictive, and with that many cubes to feed you need maximum airflow

Got a good filter directly on the mixer. Should flow plenty I hope.
