My '37 JT has been leaking coolant from the water pump. It appears to be coming out around the shafts on both ends. I've never had this apart. Are there seals that go in there or is it just packing of some kind?

Also, there is a short peice of hose on the top side that needs to be replaced. I'll have to pull the pump to do this. Since that also drives the mag, is it possible to pull the pump without messing up the timing?

There is packing behind the big nuts. IF you have some thread left and they are not frozen, you could try turning them in some. If you need packing, Charlie Biler ar external_link.com probably has some.

If you can't get packing any other way, I have used the graphite string sold for faucet repairs with some success. Just don't remove what is in there, put a few turns (3, 4 or 5) around the shaft and jam it in behind what is already there with the nut.

I forgot: if you remove the pump, you will probably have to re-time the magneto. It times at TDC and the mark on the flywheel can bee seen through the little access port on the other side of the engine.

I had to use my largest channellocks to turn the coupling when setting the timing, It wanted to jump way too far with any smaller wrench when the impulse snapped. When it snaps on #1 cyl, piston at TDC, tighten the jam nut on the coupling.

P.S. the impulse timing advance for the JE engine is 35 degrees, if you ever need to know.

I am thinking I replaced that hose by bending the new one double and twisting it in there without removing the pump, its been a while and I may be thinking of some other repair.

How do you get the big nuts loose. Both of my JT"s are leaking and the nuts are frozen. I have been unsuccesful with pipe wrench and cheater on the one that was already chewed up. Can you use heat on them?

Thanks

Gary

I wouldn't be surprised if mine are frozen also. I haven't really tried them yet, but there are a lot of nasty marks on one of them--looks like it had a pipe wrench or channel lock on it at some point.

t.r.k. Thanks for the info. Hopefully I can figure out a way to get that hose replaced without removing the pump.
