Help With UB Designations

Please help me understand some M-M designations. I'm researching the UB diesels. I have pics a 1954 UB diesel that falls under the UBU category by it's serial numbers (07800353). I have some advertising that indicates the last "U"in the UBU designation indicates the front end type, with that "U" indicating a double wheel narrow front. In the illustration I have, there is an "S" type front and, an "N" and an "E". In the serial number lists, I find UBU, UBE, but I don't find UBS. I also find UBG. My head is spinning... can you help a fella out?

Also, I can't find much info on the introduction of the M-M 283 diesel. The info I have is that they were working on it as early as '52 but it didn't appear until the '54 model year. True? Are there any books that cover it in detail. Many thanks!

Hi Jim ---there is a very good book that will give you all your answers---MINNEAPOLIS -MOLINE FARM TRACTORS----BY CHESTER PETERSON &ROD BEAMER--the book has a pic on the front cover of an UDLX --i do not know where to obtain it but have heard of it being out there --i have one-- i looked for your answers and they were there --too much typing for me --if you do-not find one get back to me and iwill go photo -copy those pages -good luck lee

--amazon .com has the book---new price 186.98---used price --63.70 --expensive but worth it --lee

With your serial number it makes your tractor a UBUD.U for universal and D for diesel. There was no S standard designations in UB series. 283 diesel motor were used in U and UB series. Less diesels were mades than gasor LP.

Just want to add:

The reason that there is no UBS is MM continued to make standard tread UTS tractors with hand clutch until about 1958.

(I am thinking the last ones were UTS Diesels destined for the country of Turkey. Probably after the 5 Star was in production for the US market. There was someone on here about 4-5 years ago in Turkey who was wanting to sell a large lot of UTS diesel parts.)

There were a very few (23? 25?) UTUs built with diesel engines, probably in 1952. I've seen pictures of them on the net and in the MM collectors publications.

There was a UBS with the high platform, foot clutch and UB steering column and standard front axle and rear axles running around in Ohio back in the '90s. I've got a picture of it somewhere. I think it was put together by a collector, though.

The UB diesel was introduced in 1953. I have a 1954 UB diesel with a wide front, but I think the serial # is for a tricycle front. Basically most of the UT ("U") production ended when the UB was introduced in 1953. The UTS (standard) was still being built through the production of the UB special in 1956. If you see a 4 cylinder standard tractor from that era, it will be a UTS, weather it runs on gas, lp, or diesel. I have the operator and parts/repair manuals for a UB diesel. I also have the book mentioned below by Mr Peterman. Email if intersted in any of the books. I will be happy to answer any more questions.

i think that the mix on the ub is that there was a ub special--- not a UTS----- -----which had a different grill and radiator for power steering--which there was total of 520 made until 1957----there was a total 1451 ub diesels madefrom 1954 thru 1957 " quoting from the book " thanks lee

MMoon: Many thanks! I have seen that book but I think I'll let the price come down a bit. That book sold for about $20 when it was first published.

To the rest, just so I'm clear, that last letter DOES stand for the type of front axle, right?

No UB Standard... got it.

What about the UBG... what was that?

Thanks, Gents!

The tag on my 1954 UB diesel reads the model as "U", and the serial number 7800191 designates it as a UBED, and it had a Schwartz wide front on it. On my 1955 UB Special diesel, the model designation on the tag is UBD, and it has a factory wide front, serial #9800135. Can someone tell me how many of the regular UB diesels were made? I've always wondered.

For the UB diesel:
type U Tricycle 1954 746 made
1955 295 made
total 1041 made

type E wide front 1954 231 made
1955 131 made
total 362 made

type N single front 48 made in 1954 only

I think that makes 1541 UB diesels
520 UB special diesels were made, and front ends were no longer designated.

Here in the UK MM assembled UDS tractors at Essendine near Stamford using UTS transmissions and axles imported from the states and fitting Dorman and Meadows diesel engines sorced in the UK. Very good tractors for contractors but to expensive for most farmers. When MM stoped making the tractors in 1949 AC took the factory over to make the B tractor, the Rotobaler and the Allcrop 60 combine. MJ

There were no UB diesels in 53 they are all 54 and newer. The UB diesel uses the same ring gear as a G gas. The 54 and newer UB will take a G engine without opening up the bell housing the 53 will not you have to grind out the housing to get a G ring gear in it.

Interesting history on how AC took over the MM plant. I've got an early 1949 UTU built with one of the UDS transmissions shipped back from the UK in 1948. Nothing special about it that I know of but interesting knowing it was well traveled before being built in 1949.

I have that book....got it at the Heidrick Museum in Woodland, Ca in 2005. I believe I paid something like 25 dollars for it. It is good...has most of the build info. on MM's from almost day one to the end of production.
