UTU clutch noise

I have noise coming from the clutch area that sounds like a worn out pto shield flopping on its shaft or exposed dry gear train on steamer. It seemed to pulse about 2x a second at half throttle. It's there whether the clutch is engaged or disengaged. I didn't investigate too deeply other than peering in the inspection hole with a flashlight. It was loudest inside the hole. Throwout bearing has grease.
Any ideas? Just thought of this: maybe starter drive was stuck?
thanks

I agree - sounds like the starter pinion is not retracting fully.

Try starting the engine then loosening the starter and sliding it forward a bit. If the noise stops remove the starter and check the pinion drive. Could be a simple cleaning/lube of the bendix screw will correct the problem.

using the stick-o-scope method, the starter area is
quiet. wiggling the throw out makes no difference to the noise. So far closing the clutch door makes the
most difference ;)
The source might be on the flywheel side of the
engine or in the clutch housing. More non
destructive testing and investigation is in order.
