U hood side panel wears through on exhaust manifold

What's the trick to keeping the exhaust manifold from wearing through the hood side? Every old U I see has this problem. I don't want to repair and paint my hood just to have it wear through again.

Thanks!

Chris.

That's pretty common for U's that have the heat exchange manifold. One good way to solve this is to replace the manifold with a later type without the heat exchanger. They are available brand new and also can be found used.

what i did on my u puller was to get some header wrap like is used on race cars and wrapped the manifold with it and it did very well on keeping the heat down. didnt have a problem with the paint then.

If a U has the original "pot belly" manifold it's imperative you keep the heat control fitting and muffler connections tight and leak-free. Otherwise leaking exhaust will impinge on the inside of the hood and burn off the paint. The sheet metal then very quickly rusts out.

Also as jd plowboy suggests, a layer or two of header wrap or fiberglass cloth fastened to the inside of the hood near the manifold will help protect it from the heat.
