U Stock pulling tire size

I pulled for the first time recently with my '49 UTS.

I weighed it in to 5960lbs in the 5-6000lb class.

My U has 16.9-30 tires.

I had a real hard time getting traction. I had around 5 psi in the tires.

Should I be switching to a much skinnier tire, or moving up a class?

It had lots of power left, but just couldn't bite like some of the others in the class.

Thanks!

Chris.

Try a higher gear if your rules will allow it. If 3 mph is the max for the pull speed & the next higher gear is above 3 mph, throttle it back & slowly increase as your ground speed decreases. I ran into the same thing when I pulled my UTS for the first time this year. I pulled in the 5500 class & should have been in third. Still had the same issue even up into the 6500 class. Think I can use the same gear on up into the next class. One way to find out! Clear as mud? Good luck!

Hi Chris,

5psi seems a bit low. What was the track like? When you pull next time and spin out, look at the marks in the dirt after you are done and that will tell you if your tires were set correctly.

Where is your hitch set? Both vertically and horizontally? You weighed in at the top of the class, which is good, but do you have any idea of your weight distribution between the front and rear axles? You might have just needed a better balance to get a good hook.

A UTS should do very well in a 6000lb class, even with 30in tires.

Take a look at link below showing some MM hitches. I have more pictures that I will be uploading soon. The first hitch shown is on a UTS. Also, there are some other pictures and videos on the website that may help.

Good luck on your next hook,

Zack Peterson
