What Hydraulic Fluid Is Clear?

I found out today that my tractor has a clear hydraulic fluid in the back-hoe and loader system. It has a very slight yellow tint. I thought, except for Skydrol, hydraulic fluid/ATF was red. Any idea what it might be?

John, I have never seen red hyd. fluid. hyd. is usually thicker than ATF although there is light weight Hyd. available. You can put cheap fluid from your locally owned auto parts store in that unit.

I believe what they call ISO 32 is a light weight hydraulic oil that is kind of clear and has a light yellow tint to it. That is what I have in my one M5. I believe it is 10w or 20w. I think they used to have red hydraulic oil years ago MM did, was referred to as Type 55, but like showcrop said it is usually a little thicker than ATF. (I think Oliver also used it in their over under hydraul shifts). I was told that the current ATF supersedes Type 55.

Chevron has a tractor Hyd-trans fluid that is red. It is used in Massey Fergusons Fords Internationals and JDs From 1965yr to today. Shell has the same product. Last year it had blue dye this year it is clear. They are as thick as ISO-68 maybe slightly thicker. They do perfrom much better then straight Hyd-oil. I perfer the Shell. It holds up better in hot weather and heavy loads. Hyd-oil just does not cut it. It ends up with a burned smell.

Hi Hand, I use strictly Hy-tran in my power shift tractors but straight and separate hydraulic systems such as fork lift and older tractors get mfg. spec hyd. oil in the hyd. system and mfg. spec. oil in the tranny. If I had to work one a significant amount outdoors in the winter then it would get the mfg. spec for that temp.
