I am looking at an 800 LP irrigation pump, and also a 605. Going to be pumping water on tobacco in KY, pulling a reel and a some pipe, max of 5000 feet. Any major weaknesses in these two motors. Will they both do a fine job for this application? Any input is appreciated.

If you can get your fuel cheap enough they will work fine if in good condition. Many shops here once made exhaust headers for them to replace the cast iron manifolds when they are used around sprinklers. Still lots of parts for them in this area, Texas, Kansas & Nebraska. May not be as fuel efficient as new computerized engines but cost a fraction of what they do new.

We've run a bunch of stationary MM's... HD 800's, old style 800's, 605's, etc. Even an old HUA with cast iron pistons. They are good old engines.

Be sure and let them warm up good before you put them under a load. It can gald a piston fairly easy, if you don't.

Be especially sure the manifold is completely full of water when you start it, if it has the water-cooled exhaust manifold.

We always put a Murphy float level gauge on them to kill the engine if the water level drops. You can crack a head (or all three) pretty easily if you get one hot.

For some reason, it is very common for the water pump to leak the water out of the motor when it is not running, but not leak at all while it is running.

The ball bearing style water pumps are much better.

Hope this helps,
Howard

They use those engines quite a bit today especially in the South and Southwest. The HD800 is considered to be the best of irrigation engines. Many folks use diesels of other brands, but LP is cheaper recently and the HD800 has the size to pump deep wells. The 605 is no slouch either. E-mail me at edberry78@hotmail.com and maybe I can put you in touch with some people.
