F40 hydralics.. NOTHING, up or down

Good morning guys n gals. New here and purchased a Massey F40 from a private party that him and the owner of the place where it was sitting for about 4 years stated that the hydraulics worked.. Well, NOPE. Nothing, up or down.
I flushed it with about 5gal of Diesel fuel (the old fluid was like creamed coffee) then about 10gal of tractor hyd trans fluid and still nothing.

I did a search for hydraulics and came up with 147 pages..!
Dang, did they have that many problems with thier hydraulics??
I got in touch with a 'local' Massey guy in Greneda Mississippi and he told me it was most likley the pump.
The one in the tractor does not have a filter attached and he told me that the 'newer' one with filter can be used in my application.. (I sure hope so, it cost me 400.00)

Well I pulled both of the side covers off and tried to move the actuating levers to the pump and they only move about 3/16-1/4" And that's the WHOLE swing of the adjusting levers on the outside.( draft and position levers) SO moving the whole way front or back moves it that much.. :?

I purchased the little I&T book (little is right!) but doesn't give one really that much to go on.. I tried to put the external levers in the 'adjustment' paragraph but I DON"T have the little two holes to line up the draft lever-slide.. And it states that adjusting the Master control spring has endplay with EITHER the retaining nut is too loose or too tight.. :shock: SO which one could it be? Still nothing
And it doesn't state if there are any torue specs to putting the cover plate back together. I read in a thread here that you MUST take the control arms off to put the plate back on..

Sorry for all the rambling and jumping around but What would be the first and easiest things to adjust or look for before I have to pull the old pump?

I grew up on sod farm when I was younger so I'm not afraid to jump into pulling it apart, but with kids and other obligations I'd rather not do extra work..

Another thing.. How hard would it be to put a loader bucket on this F40 if the only hyd pump is in the trans??
I've seen on Ebay pumps that mount to the PTO and go from there.
You would need a resivior to right?

The first thing you should do is get a copy of a shop manual for the MH/MF 50 tractor that was produced by MF. It is so much better than the I & T manual. Contact you nearest MF/AGO dealer or get one from Jensales (they have a web site). Without a proper manual it is going to be dificult for you to complete the project. Good luck.
 
If you got to FENA - Ferguson Enthusists of North America's website (google it) you'll find information on F40.

The only thing I found that I-T manual was good for was as a dust collector. Get all the manuals -parts, shop, and operators manual and know them by heart.

When you have found a servicing MF/AGCO Dealer have them give you an www.acgopartsbooks.com account. The parts manuals are online now and I can access the entire MF/MH/Ferguson lines from my computer. (Sorta like JDParts, but it doesn't give you pricing or sub numbers...)

I've learned all of this the hard way.

The 1/4 to 3/16 in stroke is plenty. These fingers actuate the control valve lever. Push it to the rear of the tractor carefully when the engine is running. This should open the inlet valve. If it is going to pressurize this will do it. Also open your email and I will send you a link to the scanned pages from the Massey hydraulic manual. They are from a 65, but I believe eveything is the same or similar. Pump rebuild is straightforward and about 180 bucks. I did mine on the kitchen table.

Thanks Guys, Ready for the whole story?
Well here goes. I'm pretty good with a wrench (and hammer) but was intimidated by the diagrams thinking that it was over my head.
I just got tired of waiting and a guy in Graneda MS told me that he would charge me 1800.00 to put the 400.00 rebuilt pump (that I already purchased from him) in and adjust.
SO, i just tore into it.. Well, if I didn't take time out to paint some things and wash out the trans res with gas, i would have been done in about 2 hours. :x :x

I purchased the DVD on the hyd rebuild but they really don't give great shots of the parts and the lighting is adaquate at best.
I did have to order a piston/rings for the ram under the seat but when I pulled the cyl out I took the linkage out with it.
It took me a few tries to get it back in there respective slots.
(Lots of wear on some of the rollers..)

Well, got it all back together with the 'fingers' in front of the actuating arm/roller and fired it up.. :D :D It moves up pretty fast and kept the R-side cover off and fluid started spraying inside the case.
I would suspect its from the bypass but is really spraying.
Is this NORMAL?

I was actauting the levers to raise the arms (still up)
BUT the full swing of the levers would press on the roller arm and then release it. (like off-on-off) but arms for 3-pt don't go down.
Should there be wieght be on them to lower or release the pressure out of the piston cyl???
I'm just tickeled that I'm 1800.00 richer i guess

OK the next problem is It stuck in REV backed up to my mower.
I tried to buck it and wiggle it.. Even promise it a vacation but it wouldnt' budge. After getting on level ground, I tried rocking the wheel and hitting my hand on the shifter, leaned foreward and SNAP the shifter came off in my hand (my wife took a few quick steps back cause I've been known to throw things.. The neighbor kids like finding broken ratchets worn screw drivers, stripped bolts and the such)

ANYhow, HOW IN THE WORLD do you change out the shifter through the little filler hole..
DON"T tellme i have to take the whole steering console off and pull the cover just to change them out??
