I have one knotter in each baler that wont consitantly tie. It would miss every other bale or so and on occasion produce a weak knot. Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem may be? Im a bit at a loss here!! Thanks

Is one end of the string pulling out and the other tying a knot? Do both pull out straight? What twine are you using? I don't know balers much but have a lot of recent experience figuring out my relic. Remember old balers weren't made for the thin plastic twines, it wsn't made then. The sisal is a thicker twine and works different in spots because of it. Mine was pulling one end of the string out straight and knotting the other on most of the failures. I tried sisal and it seemed something was cutting it away from the knot. Most of the time it worked though. I finally went to the 170lb. strength plastic twine, AND, I filed the fingertip of the knotter just a smidge to allow it to close further. It wasn't holding the ends of the twine enough to forcibly pull it through the knot. I also tighted the tension on the knotter roller thing. Last weekend I was 422 for 427 bales, until the rough field bounced the baler enough both needles crashed the ram. wonderful I'm fixing the wear guides on the ram now.

Hi LC: Andy posted about our balers and I would like to thank you for responding with such sound advice. Yes, the problem was one end knotting, one end just sliding through. We have always used sisal so that wasn't a factor. We did file the beak down, seemed to help at first and then just got dreadfully worse. Finally, when we were able to spend the time with it, we rotated the power take-off (fly-wheel) with a pry bar and were able to watch it go through its movements very slowly. It became evident that the swing-arm assembly was not adjusted properly to push the twine together with the other end and form the knot. This arm was tightened and miracuously it knotted perfectly. We haven't been able to really test it fully as we aren't ready to bale until tomorrow - but here's hoping that has finally fixed the problem. I hope you can understand how I described it to you - you never know - you may find the information useful one day. Thanks again for your helpful response. Enjoy your summer. Susan

Got a 12 that's been in service here for 30+yrs.Most common knotter problem has been weakend springs in the knotter assy. We've never filed fits in all these years.String quality has also affected performance. Not for long in our hayfilds.Cheapest repair we ever used is grease.Fix it before it breaks. If you baled 1k bales yesterday,grease.10 bales and you got rained out yesterday...grease bfore you start today!!!
