Turning up pump

The exact details would depend on knowing the make and type of IP we are gonna play with.

Bottom line is that IP's are set at the factory to limit fuel rate to what the engine needs to develop rated horsepower, and to limit RPM's to factory "specs".

"Turning the pump up" defeats one or both of these factory settings.

Times two what Bob said, depends on what make/model the pump is, rotary or inline, and if inline, what governor type. There are some applications machine wise engine is de-rated a bit to protect the machine, and the engine can handle a max fuel setting increase. Also makes a difference whether engine is turbocharged or not. No turbo engines more fuel just means more smoke in most cases with no power increase. Turbo engines will still have a clean exhaust under heavy load IF the turbo is working right, even with a 50% fuel increase or more. Water and exhaust temp will climb to engine damage levels quickly under heavy load when bubba gets carried away with the fuel screw.

Thank you both for the replies. Guess some people just think they know more than the factory techs when they start messing with settings.
