MF35 Hydraulics

My MF35 has rear-end hydraulic fluid seeping out the relief valve on the left front of the lift cover. And the lift arms raise without an implement, but not with one attached. The lift had raised fine for some years after I replaced the pump and cylinder. Though it always dropped quickly after shutting down the tractor. I’m reading my parts manual and TO20 Service Manual. Any thoughts if these symptoms are consistent with the relief or control valve or both? Or possibly something else too?

Hello, in changing the pump and cylinder
you have lost the adjustment for the
'neutral point' for the control valve. It
would appear that the control valve is
remaining slightly in the pumping position.
It is displacing enough oil to lift the
empty linkage but not with an implement.
You will need to go through the adjusting
sequence to correct it.

Manual No. 1448 811 M1

Section 10

Contains 30 pages of Info:

Where is this manual available? I have an MF202 which is the industrial version of the MF35. So, would this manual also apply to my MF202?

I entered "Massey Ferguson Service Manual No. 1448 811 M1" on the Internet, there was at least three suppliers info:

I read each supplier and purchased from the supplier that had an original MF SERVICE Manual:

Service manual covered THREE different Engines, Two Perkins Diesels, one Continental Gasoline, plus the entire Tractor:

Thanks, David. I adjusted that a few years ago after replacing the cylinder and it would lift an implement ok. But drop right away and quickly after shutting down. Never had it quite right, but it worked. Perhaps some wear now and it requires a more precise adjustment. Perhaps I can get it right and the implement will remain raised after shutdown.

I ordered this one from someone selling with the same photo on eBay. Description said it?s a reprint of the original. Seller had pictures of a few pages and the photos look ok from what I could tell.

I just checked on Ebay. No 1448 811 M1 listed. I entered the full description as above and then just the number. Nothing.

I had a handful of the 35's, 135, 65, 165's and none would hold the arms up after shutdown, even after complete pump rebuilds. Rebuilds slowed the leakdown but never eliminated it.

I attributed it to wear on the washers sealing the pump control valve shaft and the piston rings rather than o-rings or packing on the lift cylinder piston. My guess - the ring gaps would allow a bit of oil to seep past, and let the arms down.

Bit of a safety issue - if an implement was attached and the control lever up, the implement could bite a bystander as it rose on startup. Never heard of an issue with that, and MF never corrected the problem AFIK.

Yeah, that’s a good point. I always drop attachments before walking away for that safety reason. Anyhow, I picked up The Massey Ferguson 35 Tractor Workshop Service Manual by Chris Jaworski Found it on Amazon. Lots of good info and pictures.

Hi, don't waste your time trying to get it to stay up. It will not do that and is not designed to do so. The safety aspect over-rides everything here. There are two things that you can do to slow the fall down though. Most of the leakage to allow the fall will be past the control valve and poppet valves. Renewing these will help. The other thing if it is essential to slow the fall is to fit an isolating valve to the front of the hydraulic cover. This is in effect a tap that you can shut off and then prevents leakage from the pump components. Any fall will then be due to any oil passing the piston and rings in the lift cylinder. This will certainly slow down the fall.
