Runs good starts hard

My massy 33 has new ignition parts and a
recently cleaned carb with new kit put
in.im a newbie and did as muchyself as I
could. I finally got it tuned in and
running good but it starts so hard. I have
to take the intake hose off the air cleaner
and cup my hand over it while I crank it
over to get it started. Once it's running
it runs so good. Idles down nice low and
high. I'm stuck and don't know where to go
from here. I checked for air leaks with
some spray and haven't found any. But
wouldn't it not run good if there was?
Please help...

Does the choke plate fully close? It should do the same thing as putting your hand over the carb intake. Maybe check the air filter canister and intake hose for obstructions. Those old girls usually start with the second or third flip.

Does the choke have the little spring flap on it and if it doe is the spring in place and hold it closed?? Also are you sure the choke closes as it should?? You also may have a vacuum leak some place which will cause that. Or you still have a clogged passageway in the carb

Masseys like their choke, my 44 will not pop without it, was really surprised how much fuel I had to add on the EFI to get it to fire on crank.
