Massey 165 PTO lever and cotter pin

Seemed to be a lot of play in my 165?s pto handle when engaging and gravity is pulling it out of gear...
Can feel a detent she. I engage it but it doesn?t seem to hold firmly in place. PTO clutches/etc have no trouble staying engaged...gravity is doing it in and the detent doesn?t seem to be firm enough to fight gravity.

So, like I said, seemed to be a lot of play. Removed the cotter pin, neither hole is worn but the shaft sticking out of the tractor does not stick out far enough to properly line up with handle hole. It is spring loaded and I can pry it out a little with a nail but the spring pulls it back inward.

I am thinking to get the detent and handle to work properly, there must be some way to hold it out properly to get the holes lined up for a cotter pin. Right now a crooked nail is making it work. But it isn?t right. Hopefully this all kind of makes sense?

The lever on my 65 was flopping around when I got it. It had a nail in it too. I took 1/4 inch bolt that was long enough to go through plus 1 inch an ground the end to a point. Pushed it through then put a lock nut on it. Works fine now with no play.

The detent spring/ball is what's pulling it in. Remove the cover, push out the shift arm and install the lever, using the largest roll pin that will fit. Then it will shift like it should.

Thanks Dieseltech.

Cover is the round plate held on by 6-8 ish bolts?
Any concerns in removing cover... I.e. - is it going to dump hydraulic fluid?

Any parts easily lost or is it just straight and simple?

If the rear dipstick shows full, oil will come out the bottom of the six bolt holes. Main thing to watch for when replacing the cover assembly is making sure the lever pin enters the PTO gear shifting groove.
