Looking at Massey 135

Going to look at a Massey 135 after work to upgrade from my 8n. Any common things I should be looking for on this machine? Don't know anything about these units.

Gasoline Engine?

3 cylinder Perkins diesel?

Engine HRS?

Engine running water for coolant?

Engine running 50/50 water glycol antifreeze?

PTO Drive:

Two stage clutch...Live PTO?

Last time PTO was driving attachment? eg....Brush cutter / Rotary mower?

Last time three point hitch / lift was in operation?

Tractor ever have a LOADER MOUNTED on it?...front axel pin wear?

Manual steering? Power steering?

Step on clutch, verify if PTO GRINDS when engaging PTO?

Hi, you won'y find better if it has been looked after. JD above has said a lot but a few extra things to look for are;
Any sign of oil or dust inside the brake drum back plates? The operating brake arms running from the axle housing to the brum when in the 'on' position should be roughly around the six o'clock position or slightly forward when looked at from the wheel each side. If they are appreciably leaning forward then the probability is that the brakes will be poor to very poor and require the cams building up with weld. Simple enough job.
Hold the main gear lever in your hand and try to ROTATE it in NEUTRAL. If there is significant movement then the chances are that the gear levers coming out of the selector jaw is growing. A new pin and/or gear lever will rectify this.
Check for any oil leaks around and under the engine and at the transmission weep split-pin.
If it is a swept (bent) front axle check the pivot bush, the long bolts at the front of the radius rods and for any gap under the king-pin top arms. Up to 1/16" is OK anything appreciably more suggests wear in the KP thrust bearings possibly through having a loader fitted.
Check under the clutch housing to see if the blanking plate is in place. If it is not there that is a good indication that it has had a loader on it and the plate has not been replaced. Unless the seller can verify that no loader has been fitted, do not accept only his word.

I know this isn't machine specific, so just making sure you look for these also. Oil in coolant, coolant in oil, fuel in oil, milky hydraulic fluid, etc. Make sure coolant isn't bubbling. Any exhaust smoke & color.

John Deere D .......... What does a grind when engaging pto mean? Mine does this.

If there is a problem, and or the PTO CLUTCH release mechanism is NOT PROPERLY set.....when the operator steps on the CLUTCH PEDAL, the PTO CLUTCH plate shall continue to rotate causing the drive train to continue to rotate, when the operator tries to engage the PTO shaft (that is not rotating )there shall be a terrible "grinding Sound"..

This is as per my MF 35....Dual Clutch...

If the MF 135 has Independent PTO then I have no experience with the this arrangement "IPTO"..

Here is a picture of an "IPTO" arrangement....I believe credits to "ptfarmer for picture"
