MF-50 generator test

Hi, Battery not charging... I loosened the belt and
removed the wires applied bat voltage to the ARM terminal
the generator is motoring.

The fact that the generator is motoring does that mean
the generator is good ? or it may not charge even if motoring.

Thanks in advance

Bart

Any generator I've had that motored was good. Hook the wires back up, run the engine about 1/2 throttle and ground the generator FIELD terminal. If the system shows charge then, voltage regulator is not working. Sometimes just removing the cover and cleaning the contacts with the battery disconnected will get it working again..

What engine does your 50 have, and are you interested in keeping it 100% original. A GM type one wire alternator setup would save you tons of headache now, and later.

Thank you for your replies...greatly appreciated.

It is a Z134 Continental engine

I grounded the field terminal = no charge
It stopped charging few weeks ago.
I will bring the gen to an elect shop to check it.

I would like to stay with the generator because the tach works and
try to keep the tractor as original as possible.

Thanks again !

Bart

Grounding the field terminal bypasses the regulator side of the voltage regulator.

You could still have a cut out in the regulator that is not closing.

Leave ground on field terminal, jumper from generator Armature to BAT connection on regulator. If it now charges your cut out is not closing.
