a friend of mine picked up a model 300, tried to start it and he figured out real quick like it was in gear. he tried again and when he released the key the starter and motor continued to crank. as a result the negative cable melted. he replaced the cable, solenoid and key switch and it continues to get the negative hot and crank even after the key is released. can anyone offer an idea of whats happening. thank you. and yes he cleaned the connections on the starting system. that was the first thing i asked.

If it uses a starter button it could be bad or stuck. If it uses the key switch then it is likely to be bad

Could also be a bad solenoid right out of the box or he may have the starter side of the solenoid hooked to the battery side which can also cause problems. Some solenoids have a battery and starter side to them and if hooked up backwards can cause that

Old one was bad and the new one could well also be bad or if it has a solenoid like on the Fords the wire going to the solenoid could be shorted. Only way it could be doing as your saying is to have power to the starter when ever the battery is hooked up so it is in the wires going from the battery to the solenoid and then to the starter.

300 what??? combine? they have the soleniod on the starter and if the hold in solenoid is stuck it will crank. do you have a 12 volt battery hooked to 6 volt system?? never have enough info .
