My grandpa has a late 40s early 50s massy thats been parked for about 10 years, he recently gave it to me and I have interests in restoring it. Hasn?t ran since and It?s been sitting outside since parked. I spun the crank the engines not seized, but I?m sure everything?s sludged and dirty. Tips on where to start and how to clean that out? Thanks in advance

Take the valve cover off and make sure all the valves are opening and closing properly as you turn it over by hand. Check fuel flow, carb, ignition....change the oil, check the coolant and fire it up!

I would start by pulling each spark plug out one at a time then fill the cylinder with ATF put the plug back in and go on to the next plug. Once all are full pour as much down the exhaust pipe as you can till it leaks some place. Let it sit a few days then pull all the plug out being sure not to mix them up. Spin it over to clear the ATF out and then go from there. The ATF will free up sticking rings and clean the rust off the cylinder walls.

hear the price of oil lately, i hardly think anybody would be pouring a few gallons of ATF down the exhaust pipe, then spitting it out the plug holes making a hell of a mess everywhere.
just get the tractor started and then put to work under a good load to free up the rings if they are possibly stuck. good idea to even do a compression test before and after. and give each cyl. a few squirts of oil any oil even 2 cycle oil before starting to make sure you have top end lube and help with starting. then its the heat and compression under a load that will cure it by driving the rings outward into the cylinders.

Few gal???????????????? No way it will even come close to being that much. Might take 2 quarts if even that much get real

better think of what your posting. bet you dont even waste oil like that. just to fill the cyl;s is about 3 quarts, plus filling the exhaust pipe for what ever reason will take another gallon! plus filling till it leaks out someplace which would be out the top of exhaust pipe! plus depends how long the exhaust pipe is! plain stupid advise. 2 quarts wont even fill the manifold... get real ya!
you only need about 6 pumps out of a squirt can to lube cyl's.

Funny when I did that to the 44 I have it took less then 2 quarts.
That said I have asked you to leave me alone BEFORE IF ALL YOU CAN DO IS PUT ME DOWN

Actually you are both wrong. To fill the a cylinder on a stock 44 would take 1.12 quarts per hole. :)

Having said that, I think Ben has best answer. Most important thing is enjoy the gift from your grandfather. I have a couple family tractors and no amount of money would buy any of them.

actually you are wrong, there is pistons in the cylinders. 2 will hold more oil than the other two, unless it is stopped perfectly with the piston half way up on all 4 cyl's which i never seen happen. my guess is more accurate than your 1.12 quarts per cyl.

i like to see correct information and all is good. yes ben has the correct info! i did not even give any info as i agree on what he said, and thats the way i do things to an engine sitting for lengths of time. i also lube the cyl's on any engine sitting with a few squirts of oil. basically go right throught it fuel and ignition wise and a valve adjustment.
and they fire right up.
