Engine oil and service manuals recommendations

Tin man

Recently bought a fairly well kept Massey Ferguson MF35 with the Z134 Continental (gas) engine.
I would like to acquire the service/operators/parts/wiring/etc. manuals. Any advice on which of the different publishers offerings contain the "best" information?
Finally, which of the (modern) lubricants do I need to be using?

Thanks in advance

agcopubs (add .com) to that, this forum won't let me link. That's where you'll find the factory manuals as written by Massey Ferguson.

I use non detergent oil in the motor, 15w40 in summer, 30wt in the winter.

For the trans case I use Traveller's Premium brand trans/hydraulic fluid from Tractor Supply.

I run O'Reilly's brand 20W-50 in ALL my tractors and cars etc. I'd NEVER run a non-detergent oil in any thing.

As for manual I have found no matter what manual you have it will leave out something here or there

If there's sludge in the bottom of my z134 pan, I'd like to leave it there unless I drop the pan to clean it out. Not a huge fan of how the oiling system works on this motor.

Just my two cents.

All my other vehicles/machines, I run synthetic. Just my old Massey I prefer non detergent oil. Actually, it may be straight 40wt in summer and straight 30wt in summer that I run. Can't remember.

15-40 non detergent oil??? i did not even know there was such a thing. 15-40 is associated with diesels. diesel oil has higher detergent than gasoline oils. really having my doughts on finding 15-40 non detergent oil, unless i have been a mushroom till now on 15-40.

You're right, I don't believe there is. I meant straight 40wt summer, straight 30 winter. I just looked at my jugs in the basement.

(quoted from post at 19:45:38 04/11/18) Non detergent oil should only be used to lubricate door hinges.

Agreed. Only thing I use it in is my Massey. Whatever, it spent 50+yrs running that stuff, it'll probably go another 50! :)

The Rotella 15w40 is good stuff. If I were to run detergent oil that's what I'd use.

Thanks for all the advice. I went with the Rotella and have received all the manuals. I also converted the old canister oil filter to a spin-on so I could use (my favorite) Napa Gold filters.

This is by far the best Manual I have ever owned on the subject matter that you are concerned with:

Google the MF # on the front cover and you shall locate this information:

Massey Ferguson Manual 1448 88 M1
