MF135 Steering Problems

I have a 1971 MF135 that I just had to replace the clutch and now I have issues with the power steering. Now that I have everything hooked back up, the steering either goes all the way to the left or right. I can barely touch the steering wheel in one direction and is will go to the end stop. At times steering wheel will just bounce back and forth and it is almost impossible for me to hold it still. I filled the pump reservoir with fluid and bled the air out multiple times with no success. When the engine is stopped, I can turn the wheel with no problem. I'm thinking the problem may be with the control valve on the steering column, but it appears I will have to remove the steering wheel to even access this. How can I verify if the valve is working correctly? Another option I considered is just taking the pump off and operating it with manual steering. Are there any issues with this approach? I just need my tractor and am tired of fooling with the steering. Everything worked fine before I replaced the clutch.

Hi, assuming that you you have the same power steering arrangement as
UK 135s I believe that you have two pipes connected incorrectly and
that you are pressurizing the return line coming from the control
valve. With the lower instrument panel removed and the engine stopped
you should be able to get your hand up to feel the valve and adjustable
link assembly. Removing the battery will probably help. If adjusted
correctly initial movement of the steering wheel in either direction
will move the collar on the upper part of the steering column tube up
or down. When the steering wheel is released it should return to it's
central 'neutral' position. Did you clearly mark the pipes before
seperation. Do you have a cylinder on each side of the axle beam? If is
possible that the system as soon as it detects a load on the steering
is trying to overcome it hydraulically until it reaches the end of it's
travel due to the wrong side being pressurized.
