Massey Ferguson 135 3 cylinder gas

I have 1969 Massey Ferguson 135 3 cylinder perkins GAS . It won't run unless its choked. I replace the points and Condenser thinking maybe not enough fire. I have cleaned the Carburetor . Not sure were to go from here. It sounds like it starved for gas but it has a transparent filter you can see the gas coming to the carb. Could it be the coil or cap and rotor . Maybe a air leak? Help if you can. Thanks in advance Dwayne

Needing the choke on means carb or intake trouble. I just repaired an IH 454 carb for a friend with the same trouble, on his I found he installed the carb venturi in upside down..

Most folks loosen drain on carb and while watching bowl drain think well its got good flow. Best to drain bowl then turn on gas to watch for an intermittent flow. It may take some time to detect.

It has a drain and I will do that. What about the poris metal plug looks like an old school fuel filter on the bottom carb drips gas . Is that normal?

Not sure what venturi is . I could not get any of the jets out . I put in new needle and seat and clean everything good. I have seen the new carbs on ebay for $105.00 but the Choke seems to be on the wrong side. I have look over the intake and didn't see in rust holes the hoses on the front and back of the engine coming from the intake look rough but didn't see any hole there either. This thing is draining my pockets. Thanks for replying. Dwayne

Never seen one drip from the brass looking screen underneath but my guess is that's why it's there in case of an overflow. That can be caused by debris or float bent or punctured. On a lighter note this is the first time we discovered something Dieseltech didn't know.

I have now replace the coil and plugs and points and condensor. The Carburetor was worked on by a tractor mechanic said it was fine . I still have to leave it choked to run. Not sure if the intake gasket could be leaking or the little hoses on front and back of the engine comeing from the intake. Noticed the plug closes to the engine had oil on it. This thing has been a poulan saw to me. Help!!

I had a very similar issue on my fathers 135 with perkins 3cyl gas engine. The local massey dealer billed us $800 and it ran better for 2days and went back to only running with choke on.

After my father passed I brought it to my house where I have heat and tools. I cleaned carb again, set timing and got it running better with out choking It still had a backfire around 1500 rpms I could not get rid of. Parked it outside for a few hours went to start it and it wouldn't fire. Towed it in and started from scratch. I hooked a timing light to each wire and cranked engine and found #3 plug very inconsistent spark. Basically the dealer sold me a $800 dollar defective spark plug.

The perkins gas engines seem to be very tempermental but if you are persistent and patient you will get it. Here is a list of things to check.

1. If it only runs with choke on and carb has been cleaned my guess is a vacuum leak causing a lean mixture. I replaced intake manifold gasket (hard to find I made one out of gasket paper) and carb to manifold gasket.
2. check ignition components and timing (If memory serves its 16 deg idle)
3. Check and adjust valve lash (made a huge difference in starting and smoothness)

That's a few things to check goodluck.

Thanks for taking the time to reply its hard to figure out these engines. Best Regards Dwayne

Can you tell me how to set the valve lash? Numbers and how to? It won't start at all now seems to only run when your spraying carb cleaner in the carb. Not sure if it could be a valve problem . Regards Dwayne

I can garentee it is not a valve issue. Valve lash goes out of spec slowly over time. I am certain you are having a fuel issue. I can give you valve specs and a pic out of the manual however I have tried posting pics on here and never works so I would have to send it through email.

If it would only run with choke out and now it only starts with fuel added to the carb that tells me you have a fuel starvation issue that was causing a lean condition and now has stopped fuel flow completely. Take the fuel line off the carb direct it into a container and open fuel shutoff. You should have a steady stream pouring from line.

If you have a glass sediment bowl coming out of fuel tank there is a fine screen above the bowl that could have plugged. I had issues with mine and removed it completely. I put a shut off valve inline of rubber fuel line and use a fuel filter that threads into the carb ( the filter is actualy a ford filter used on older ford truck carbs. I can get part number if needed) In a tractor that age there could be a lot of dirt in tank and possibly found its way into carb.

There is no fuel bowl just a clear fuel filter and a zenith carb. The fuel show fuel I think I will feed from a tank above the carb and see what that does. My buddy side he thought it had a leak or hole around the intake. My email is [email protected]

Sent you a email yesterday with info and pics but it got sent back claiming there was a issue with your server or secuirity settings. Basically it thought your email was a spam source. Do you have another email address I can try.

Checked the compression on it today all at 150 psi . I did see oil on the plug closes to the steering wheel last time. It didn't have any this time but I haven't started it yet. Could it be the valve tap it on that cylinder is loose? I am going to run a wire from the coil directly to the battery maybe it losing connection. I think it is leaking around the intake. Still looking at it.
