message for David P South Wales

a few weeks ago I put a message here about a neighbour with a MF 35 3cyl which failed to start on a cold morning not long after fitting new battery but has been ok until Sunday morning when it failed to start again it was fitted with new starter 2 years ago when engine was overhauled
the earth lead is not good and is fixed at the alloy fuel filter head, could this affect performance

Shumai Derwen,
Although very convenient, the filter fixing points are not good enough due to the fact that the battery tray bolts often work loose and potentially reduce contact efficiency. The best place is one of the starter mounting bolts. You will need an eyelet terminal with a 7/16" hole soldered to the cable. Make sure that the cable is heavy enough for the tractor. Heavy car type cables are not good enough.
Exactly what was, or was not happening when you tried to start the tractor?

sorry for delay
the problem with the tractor is sometimes it will start and sometimes not long after fitting new battery but it has been getting worse ...now it has to be tow started.. when the key is turned nothing no clicking or trying to start as I said the earth lead is in poor condition and is connected to the alloy filter head so I have had the idea to take jumper lead from battery connection after cleaning terminal and replacing lead and connecting to good connection on starter bolt
is it possible for starter to be faulty?
it was fitted new about 2 years ago when engine was overhauled as I remember several years ago a tractor and vehicle electrician telling me that it is no longer economic to overhaul starters with new ones so cheap but are not long lasting

Where I live it is much cheaper to have the old starter rebuilt, sounds like that guy was trying to sell a new starter. Chances are the "new" starter would still use some of the old Delco-Remy parts. A true, new starter would be all aftermarket since Delco-Remy discontinued making these starters many years ago.

Hi, most MF tractors produced in the UK were fitted with Lucas starters
and an AC-Delco dynamo. I do get the occasional tractor with a Ducellier
or Paris-Rhone starter fitted. Getting parts is difficult so it's easier
to change back to a Lucas or Lucas type.
