last call else i gotta pay 500-700 1540 split

Have this 1540 that I have been trying to put back together for the last 2 weeks. Dealer will want 500-700 to get it together, that is just put bell housing to transmission and a couple of bolts.
Have split tractors before, not a double spline one. So if you have any good tips or tricks let me know else i have to pay

how close are you able to get it
have you tried engaging the pto and putting the tractor in gear then turning the crank from the front?
 
I can tell you how we did it at the dealership. We took a couple of long bolt and cut the heads off for alignment pins,rolled the two halve together (and make sure it can t start and it is in neutral) bump the starter and put in the bolts.
 
Did you use a line up tool when you put the clutch disk(s) in, the clutch disk(s) have to be lined up really close to center, or its not going together (that's what I think your problem is).
 
Cut 3 or 4 links of all thread screwing them into the tractor bellhousing. Get the proper spline alignment tool and then roll the 2 together without forcing that last 2 inches. Sometimes it does take a lot of wiggle and giggle, maybe tell location and get some help from one of us.
 
I did not touch the clutch or take off the pressure plate so those should still be in alignment. I have put in 5 long bolts in an effort to properly align everything as well as turn the flywheel while trying to push together. Looks like both splines and the pilot all come into contact at the same time, very dumb idea makes it very difficult.

I have tapered the pilot and now may taper the splines.
 
We do a double clutch every week or so, Masseys-Fords - John Deere and others. We rarely have a problem. I never use an alignment tool. I eyeball the the discs with the pilot bearing, Put a couple of alignment pins in the bell housing and roll them together.Sometimes we roll the front, sometimes the rear. Be patient, when you roll it together measure the gap at the top, bottom and sides and turn the engine with the flywheel, don't force anything, be patient, lift one half up a little and let it back down, It will go together, be patient!!! I don't think it has been mentioned but if you are wheeling the engine into the gearbox, do you have it in top gear. If you have a mechanical PTO engage it. In this way as soon as the plate hubs and shafts make contact you can turn the PTO shaft with a screwdriver or similar and you will feel the shafts butting. A very small turn might just allow them to engage. You cannot do this if you have an independant PTO. Don't forget to remove the screwdriver. A similar thing will happen when in gear. By turning the flywheel through the starter hole you should be able to engage the main plate. Much has been said about the alignment of the plates. THIS IS ESSENTIAL. Although there is normally a little tolerance between the shafts the plates and spiggot bearing/bush should all be concentric. Also essential is the gap all round the bell housing. If you can fit a couple of bolts long enough to fit springs on with nuts this will give you a gentle pressure to engage without the risk of burring the ends of the shafts or plate hubs. If you are sure that there is nothing else blocking the refit such as the release bearing being wildly out of adjustment it is just a case of patience and trying and trying. Good luck.

why did you split it ? do many a year and once in a awhile one will be a pain but with a little turning,jacking up and down and some wiggling they all go back in place. if you replaced any parts the go over the input shaft did you test fit them ?.if you were in WI.i would give you a hand
 
Ok thanks for the replies. I did get it together today. I did 2 things different. I thought it was in gear but was not, so I put it in gear. I used extra long bolts so it easier to see which direction It was off. Only put them in a couple of threads so they could move up/down/left/right. I could see then see the left side was off by an 1/8, jacked that side up till the bolt was level and it slide in.
