PTO Sahft Seal

When I removed the shaft seal it lacked an 1/8 inch of being fully seated in the seal cartridge. I installed the new one the same way but fully seated.

When I started the tractor for pump alignment I saw oil coming out around the seal, so I stopped, recovered the oil and pulled the PTO shaft. There was a loose seal garter spring in there from the new seal. So the new seal is wrecked
Of course if I put it in right, then it was me rolling the seal lip that wrecked it.

If the old seal was installed backward that might explain why it was not fully seated. At least it didn't leak,

The side that that has the garter spring goes toward the inside of the machine. Did you grease the PTO shaft before installing it? That helps it slide through the seal without damage.

I did not mean to imply that the seal should be installed first, all i meant to say is that greasing the PTO shaft will help keep the seal intact.

Yes, I greased the shaft and the seal lip before putting them together.

You can't see the garter spring. It was out when I pulled the seal cartridge off the shaft.

The raised lip side was facing out before, and that's the way I put it back. That is to say the raised lip side was put into the seal cartridge first, so it was facing out away from the transmission.

I'll get a picture. Hold on a little bit.

The 2 PTO shaft seals. You can see the raised lip on the left side.
The other side is flat as shown in the right seal.

That's my question.
[b:bec896449f]Does that lip go inside the tractor or out to the PTO?[/b:bec896449f]

It was installed lip out to PTO before, I reinstalled it the same way.
It was not fully seated in the cartridge when I removed it. I installed the new one fully seated, same way.

99.9% of the time the garter spring goes to the inside, when you put a shaft in after the seal is put in you need to be very careful when you put the shaft in, its not too hard to knock the garter spring out.

Typical oil seal.

Just so everyone will know, the flat side of the seal is the side that has the garter spring. I pried the old one apart to see inside.
The lipped side of the seal does protrude into the cartridge slightly facing outward.

So it turns out I did install the seal oriented correctly, but I obviously buggered it when installing the shaft.
Its not the first one I've ever screwed up and probably won't be the last.
