In the course of looking for parts I have to look for my engine serial number to compare the range it was built in. My number is 203UA67485D. The 29C prefix number appear to be prior to my number is that correct ? 1971 MF 165

Hello, can't help you with the dating of
the number but the breakdown is as follows;
203- 203 cubic inches...probably in a 165
or 65?
U- made in the UK
A- made by Perkins to MF specification.
Serial number....
D- diesel.

Thank you ,I'm guessing they sent the engines over to the US to assemble in the factory here. As I appear to have a US built 165 tractor. Is that correct ?

Hello,almost certainly. The '203' engine was changed to the '212' in late
1967 so there would be no demand for mainline production. The 203 was
still fitted to the French 158 and other French-made models for some time
afterwards.

I have since found out that production numbers for the engines started using a 29Axxx sequence in 1964 so that confirms that my engine is after this.
