Massey 245 Power Steering Pump - Filter / O-ring Replacement

I replaced the filter in the power steering pump on my Massey 245. I already had the new filter and O-ring for the pump.

When I took it off, I cleaned the pump, put the new filter in, but had a heck of a time getting the O-ring to seat properly when trying to get it back together. Every time I pressed the cover on, one side of the O-ring would come off.

I had to take a hammer and tap the top of the cover to even get it to move down past the O-ring. I eventually got it on but I could tell the O-ring did not seat the way it should. I now have a very small drip from the power steering pump, something I could probably live with, but I really don't want too.

My question is, should i just buy another pump ($100 on E-bay) and replace the whole thing, or is there a trick to getting the O-ring to seat properly?

Thanks.

I find a little petroleum/rubber grease smeared indide the cannister and on the "o" ring helps ease the cannister into the pump body.
If I have to re-use an existing "o" ring, I'll smear it with some Loctite 515 or equivalent. In any case, the cannister should not be refitted onto a "dry" "o" ring,
IMHO.
