MF135 Perkins No power, black smoke

Hi all- I have a MF135 with a Perkins diesel. It was running good until yesterday when I decided to replace the oil&filter and fuel filters. After changing the filters it took forever and a lot of hand pumping to get the fuel filters full and fuel through the injection pump but it finally did start and was running normally. I drove it around the property probably 20 minutes, no work just riding, and it was running good just like before. I shut it down to put away some tools and when I restarted the tractor 5 minutes later it sounded like it was running on 2 cylinders. It starts fine but seems to have lost 1/3 of its power and has black smoke out the exhaust, heavy black smoke when giving it throttle. Any advice you guys have is appreciated!

Check the air system, MR. mouse could have been busy plugging the air intake system. That will make ANY diesel smoke, or not run at all. Also if NAPA/WIX fuel filters are used MAKE SURE there's NO O-ring in the filter top outer groove, that's the fuel inlet passage and MUST be open..

Thank you DieselTech for the reply. I used ABC1421 from Steiner Tractor for both filters. I'll check the air filter for blockages.

Removed the air filter hose to check for blockage, none present. Started the tractor without the hose, same thing... sounds like it?s running on 2 cylinders... more black smoke than usual... heavy black smoke if throttle is increased.

Do a "redneck compression test", with the fuel stop pulled out crank the engine, listening closely to the engine/starter speed while cranking. A weak, low compression cylinder will turn easier and sound like the speed increased slightly. The best test would be with all three injectors out, and the correct diesel compression tools used to get an accurate reading. If engine has a definite miss, it could be a broken rocker arm. Dad's 165 had that happen years ago..

Not very Scientific however...with Engine running at min speed take, your Thumb and Index finger, squeeze # 1 fuel line "Top of fuel pump to # 1 Fuel Injector"...do the same with all three fuel lines.

Repeat with Engine RPM at 1800 RPM

I had a similar (But no smoke)scenario,A3.152 Perkins....it was immediately evident, # 2 fuel supply line and or # 2 fuel Injector and or # 2 plunger in Fuel pump was faulty:

Great idea but my fuel lines are metal.

My MF FE 35 X 3 cylinder Perkins Diesel also has metal fuel lines.....I was totally surprised when I was able to tell Immediately that # 2 fuel run had a problem....where exactly... I had to trouble shoot...

You can also crack each injector line one at a time at the injector when its running, you will find which one is the culprit being either the injector, or the injector pump. Since its a rotary injector pump I would think its not a problem with the injector pump itself, if you have 20 minutes watch this about the injector pump. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqDBMLB7jcY
