MF 165 multipower

new problem today. Started using the tractor and it cost down hill so the multipower is not working. where do I even start with this? It sounds like no matter what the issue I will have to split the tractor.

I should have stated it is in high or suppose to be. There is no noticeable change when moving the multi power lever.

Depends on what options are on the tractor. To start I'd make sure the shift linkage is right. That adjustment can happen without much effort. If you have some true auxiliary ports (not the kind coming from a box on the top cover) do they work (multipower and true auxiliary ports use the same pump)? Does it have independent or live PTO? Independent uses the same pump for braking does it hold stopped? If you split I see no reason at that point not to replace the pump (I could see maybe not going this if its still strong), shift valve and clutch pack parts. Yes it is more expensive and some of it might not be necessary but I'd rather not split a tractor a whole bunch of times so do it all while there. My Massey dealer always said most of the time the issue is the pump went out.

I'd say adjust linkage first
From there pull top cover and check pressure (If pressure is good could be shift valve or input shaft seal leak) (If low or no pressure check filters but you'll probably have to split it)

I'll say all this knowledge is based on my 180 and not a 165 but I believe they are similar enough that I spoke to most of it correctly.

Could just be low on oil. Could also be the MP shift rod is not moving up-down as it should, up is low, down is high. I've also seen the shift spool valve bell crank pivot bolt broken, then the shift spool won't move in-out as it should. Check the simple things first.

The PTO is Manuel shift and no auxiliary ports. My book says you cant pressure test it. But if you remove the top cover couldnt you break the line and test it there? I think the tractor can be run without the top cover? If it is the pump can it be replaced through the top cover without splitting the tractor?
I tried to check the linkage. It is under the steering and not easy to get to. I loosened the clamping bolt but could not move the linkage it is rusted. But the rod is near the maximum adjustment anyway. I did unbolt the outer linkage and moved the lower one up and down. I did expect more resistance then it had So it could be that that pivot bolt or something else is wrong with the linkage. If that is the case I would expect the clutch is also damaged being run that way. the clutch is removed through the front of the bell housing right?

Main clutch is separate from the MP system. Very early 165s were like the late 65, no place to pressure check the MP system. The best way to access the pump pressure line is to remove the shift lever top and steering box assembly. You can see the pump through the lift cover hole, but no way to do any testing there..

Sounds like I will be splitting it. Can the multipower pump be removed through the lift cover with out splitting?
If not it sounds like I have to split at 2 location. Separate from the engine to get to the clutch pack and then separate the transmition to get at the mulipower pump?

If you want the MP clutch pack out that needs a double split anyway, at the engine AND rear of transmission. Reason is the clutch main shaft through the MP clutch must go out the rear..

Does it make any difference when splitting the tractor if you pull the front away or pull the back away. Most everything I see for stands involves some type of wheels attached to the front. I am thinking I could take a 4*4 on each side drill a hole through it and bolt one to each side of the engine as legs. Then just use a floor jack under the transmition and role the whole back half away and leave the front in place standing on the 4x4 legs. would this work or is there something wrong with this idea.
Also is there any reason to remove the lift cover or can that stay on the tractor.

You should be able to do it either way but going back together you need to be able to adjust both halves. I used 2 floor jacks. If it is like my 180 the lift cover would need to come off to remove the pumps since they are all bolted together and the 3 point pump interacts with the lift cover (pressure tube and response roller).
