Mf 65 continental g176 rebuild

Cheapfix

New User
Hello all new to forums and relatively new to tractor repairs. Got a decent mf 65 a year or so back and fell in love. Right away found a leak in the head gasket so I reworked the head and put it back together it worked hard and long a few months then one day it started running rough, and getting worse the more it ran. I messed with everything I new to before checking compression. It was much lower in #2. I checked the sleeves and found scoring inside. Got a piston and sleeve kit for it and old sleeves out. Then I checked the crankshaft because the crank bearings were excessively worn and found it scored and out of spec. Now I?m kinda lost as to what to do and how to proceed. I?d like to keep the tractor because I have already put more into it than it?s probably worth and I really like it. Any advice on removing the crank and anything else I should look out for would be greatly appreciated.

Good day "cheapfix"

Welcome to the form......

I've been in the same boat as you are. I purchased a fine looking Case 610B...then a fine looking JD 520,then a splendid running MF FE 35.......then another three TEA-20's that I knew nothing of the history of any of these Tractors......oh, but they sure looked great...:) I spent $2,000.00 on each tractor...that's parts only:

My back ground positioned me well to handle any challenges with my great looking Tractors:

Given the vintage of your MF 65, and if you have no proof of parts investment into this Tractor before you purchased it, I would treat it like a 55 year old + that requires a total inspection and go from there.

Purchase a MF 65 TRACTOR service manual:

READ SERVICE MANUAL:

Make sure you have at least $2,500.00 to invest in PARTS:

The Engine is only the tip of the Iceberg:

Three point hitch HYD. PUMP:

Clutch assembly:

Crankshaft grinding:

Water Pump:

Engine OIL Pump:

Governor assembly, Gasoline Engine.....

Oil Seals in Transmission:

Head ,Valves, valve guides,etc,etc,.

What was used as Engine coolant...WATER or Glycol based anti freeze:

There are others who shall direct you down a less expensive route, however, you can spend the $$$$$ now or keep throwing $$$$$ into this 55 + aged MF 65.

When you open up this Tractors Internal components you best be prepared for the $2500.00 +.

g176 Engines are OLD at 55+ years of age, if that 65 s Engine had to work!

Internal linkage and associated parts of the Ferguson three point hitch system:

Good luck with your decision:

Thank you guys for your prompt replies advice and
experience. In my area we have very few and
limited machine shops but I?m familiar with one we
have and I think I?ll ask them for a price range and if
they would get the bearings for me as you
suggested to_many_irons.

old tractors will drain the wallet .

The good thing is that you won't have to be making payments, and paying the interest on it for years like you would buying a new tractor. Your tractor is already paid for, and couple of thousand dollars, and some labor it should outlast any new tractor you can buy these days.

Exactly my line of thinking ptfarmer. I could be
making payments second to my mortgage on a
similar size tractor for five years or spend a little
time and money now here and there when I can on
this. Parts bills are far more flexible than loan
payments because I don?t have to buy parts every
month.
