New to me Massey 245 question

Last week I bought a 1979 Massey 245 from it's original owner. He took very good care of the tractor, but because it is new to me I am in the process of changing all the fluids and filters.

Before I change the fuel filter I have a question I am hoping some of you experts can help me with. In the service manual and everywhere else Iv'e looked the Massey 245 fuel filters show having a glass sediment bowel on the bottom of the filter. The one on my tractor looks like a normal NAPA fuel filter (#3358) with no bowel on the bottom (please see pictures). I cannot find anything on the internet that shows this kind of filter on a Massey 245.

My question is, should I just replace it with the same NAPA filter or should I order the original glass bowel filter that is in the service manual or is it no big deal either way?

Any advice on this would be much appreciated. Thanks

I would replace with same filter. Open vent screw(small screw on top housing) and let
filter fill before starting engine so you want get air in system.Let diesel run until
clear.

Mine is the same year (early S/N), 245. I have a glass bowl on the bottom. I don't know if there is a benefit to one or the other. Glass bowl would let you see water or sediment, which in the last few years I have not seen any.

They do make a kit to convert the old style filter head with the glass bottom to a spin on type filter, they cost about $50 +, and your tractor has one. Just get a replacement filter for the one that's on it now, the spin on is much easier to change out. On my 135 I bought a new filter head that takes a spin on fuel filter.

I want to thank you all for your help on this.

PTfarmer, I did notice they had a kit to convert to a spin on filter like the one in your picture, but I also noticed it has only one bleeder screw on top and mine has 2 screws (shown in my picture) so I wasn't sure it was the right one. I did order the same NAPA filter and will try to replace it this weekend. I will post some pictures when I do it.

I plan on changing my fuel filter out tomorrow, and following the manual. However since this is a screw on filter I thought I would ask some expert opinions thoughts to see if I can skip some steps or not.

The manual says after bleeding the air vent plug on top of the fuel filter, to then go to the fuel injection pump and bleed the 2 vent screws on it. After those are bled, then go to the pressure line at the injector connection and loosen those lines in order to bleed those by turning the starter motor.

The video I saw on this showed only the bleeding of the fuel filter air vent plug and then starting the engine.

In your expert opinions are those other steps necessary, or should I follow the manual to a T?

Thanks

Fill the filter full of diesel prior to screwing it on the filter head. If you get lucky it might pick up and no bleeding.

I change spin on filters on a 3cyl CaseIH and have never had to bleed. The 3 cyl perkins with the cartridge, always have to bleed it.
