MF 20 New Pump?

So I've had recent posts about ice in hydraulics. All cleaned out new oil clean filter. With the tractor running the draft control will move the vertical lever however the control valve lever wont follow it as I believe it is supposed to and position control does nothing. The hitch will move up if i manually push the control valve lever toward the back of the tractor and stay up as long as I don't touch the controls. Does slowly settle back down.

from what I've gathered I have a stuck control valve?

Do I need a new pump?

Thanks for helping the nebie with his first tractor

The draft control lever acts separate from the position control lever. Unless you are planning on doing something like plowing you just leave the draft control lever all the way back, and just use the position control lever. If the position control lifts the arms, and keeps them the position where you set it while the engine is running it ok. If you shut the engine off with the position control lever all the way back, and the lift arms slowly drop down that is kind of normal. Also on the position control there should be a stop that's bolted at the rear, don't move the lever past that stop. The stop keeps you from putting the hydraulic pump into the "consistent pumping" position, that is only used if you have remote spool valves. If that stop is missing, and move the position control too far back you will hear a whining sound. If it does that move the position control lever forward until the noise goes away.

Thanks for the reply. I figured that with the draft control. I guess I should have said in my post that ?I have the right side inspection plate off so I can see the the control linkages.

The draft control will move the vertical lever with the adjustable screw. But the control valve lever with the roller wont move without me manually pushing it.

I believe that the control valve lever is supposed to always keep contact with the vertical lever

I don't remember, do you move the lever on the pump forward (to front of tractor) to get it to lift, or backwards? In any event, there is an ocillater lever on the bottom of the valve, toward the front of the pump, that twists the
valve in the bore to keep it from sticking. Sounds like your control valve is sticking and maybe this oscillator is broken, or the valve just too gummed up to be free in it's bore. Either that or the control linkage is out of
adjustment. It seems to me that pushing that pump lever forward dumped oil to lower the arms. The valve is spring loaded to move backwards, or maybe it's the other way round. Been a long time ...

The top of the lever with roller pushes back to raise the hitch. I think it must have a spring or something that keeps constant pressure on that lever so it always wants to rise. Mine however doesn't have that so I assume that whatever keeps the pressure is broken

Seems I'll havre to pull the pump I know there are rebuild kits but wondering if a new pump would be easier

If the lever on the pump moves, and the 3 point works like it should (if you have something hooked to the 3 point, and it can raise it the pump is probably ok). Sounds like the linkage for the position control under the top cover needs some work.

I think this is it. If I run the tractor and have the draft lever at top setting while holding pressure toward the vertical lever on the control valve lever the pressure control works as it should. so I assume the spring in the oscillator is rusted or broken.

Now the question is fix that or just spend the $250 for a new pump with new seals etc.

Considering it had water, and some ice while you have that heavy top cover off it wouldn't hurt to change the pump out while the top cover is off.
