MF 245 CLUTCH ADJUSTMENT

I am working on a MF 245 gas clutch rebuild. The service manual says the finger adjustment nuts are to be 3.25 inches from the inner lip of the flywheel. I am not sure what part of the the flywheel they mean by "The Inner lip"? This is The duel clutch with the 9 inch pto and 11 inch drive discs.[/u]

Hello, this is the shoulder that the clutch unit sits on. You may have a
set of three shims to fit under the unit. If so, the figure is taken off
the outer face of the shim. The figure of 3.25 inches does not have to be
exact but that they are all the same is.

I am still unsure of exactly where that is. The flywheel attaches to the crankshaft, which has the air ring. Then the friction disc, The pressure plate, springs, then drive plate, pto friction disc, pressure plate, bevelle spring and finally clutch cover. The "shoulder" doesnt really help me understand.

As a rule of thumb on the adjustment I never let more than three treads stick out on the back side of the clutch fingers. Any more than 3 treads sticking out the clutch fingers the adjustment bolts will tend to grab onto the rivets on the clutch disk. The main thing is getting all three adjustment bolts close to the same height as possible.

Great! Thanks! I didnt think that there was a exact hight since the throw out bearing can be adjusted to the fingers. I measured and adjusted the throwout bearing to give clearance to allow me to put the tractor back together. Final adjustments will be done after.

Thanks again!

The clutch assy fits as a unit behind the
friction plate and shims or air ring as
mentioned. We call them shims on this side
of the pond as occasionally it is necessary
to fit a second set to achieve clearance.
The 'shoulder' is the ledge which contains
the 3 equally spaced pairs of threaded
holes which the retaining bolts fit into.
Make sure that you remove the 3 slave bolts
which compress the clutch unit after you
have fitted it. This will then apply
pressure to the friction plate.
