Bought a 65 Massey 135 at auction month or so ago.. changed oil..Replaced defective water pump.. now do I change the hydraulic fluid. Everything seems to work as it should with pro and 3 point... when I look thru fill hole it's caramel in color which I've read is correct. Do I change fluid or roll on with it.. if change what brand and type recommended.. thanks

I am in the same boat. I just bought a 1978 Massey 255. I am playing it safe and changing all the fluids as I have no service records for the tractor. Piece of mind, and I want a fesh start. All new filters and fluids. Coolant, engine oil, hydrauilc/trans oil ,fuel filter, power steering etc.

Most will recommend Massey Ferguson Permatran for the gearbox. I decided to purchase Shell Rotella heavy duty tractor transmission hydraulic fluid from tractor supply and will be using that.

the mineral oil that they use is yellow out of the bucket let the tractor over night then pull drain plug on the rear and see if it has water in it

The oil (the 135 does not use mineral oil) should be yellow, but you should be able to see thru it. If its yellow/milky looking it has water in it. Tractor supply (and other places similar) carry a universal tractor trans/hydraulic fluid for older tractors, don't use the universal 303 trans/hydraulic fluid.

Make sure to check all the seals too.. You dont want to change the oil just to have more water get in and put you right back in the same boat. Pun intended...
