MF 35X engine serial number help

Can someone help me with my [u:855fbc9de5][b:855fbc9de5]engine serial number [/b:855fbc9de5][/u:855fbc9de5]for the 3 cyl perkins diesel 1964 MF 35X

What is the 3rd number as seen in the photo below? Is is a letter or a mis-punched number 4 or 7.

The tractor serial number is SNMY 353514

Been a while since i had to figure that out too, but I think Perkins used an 'A' there for agricultural engines, an 'I' for industrial. The block could have a 'U' for United Kingdom there too. The engines weren't numbered in order the way a tractor serial number had to be. David P is the authority on this stuff.

Interesting Engine serial # you have :

My 1963 MF FE 35 X engine S # 1968212:

My parent ordered the above special order in 1963 from England, shipped to North Western British Columbia :

So when I look up for parts on the AGCO parts website it says parts for certain engine serial numbers but none have a range with the letter A.

So how do I look up for the parts and?

We've had a half dozen of those 152 engines; all had the 7 digit serial number with no letters. One I seem to recall had CL stamped after the number; dealer told me that meant chrome liners fitted.

Your picture may be a clue to age - the cyl head has the 3 precombustion chamber caps fitted. I think these were fitted to the heads on the early engines. They gave us fits trying to get them to seal after overhaul. Finally wound up chucking them in a lathe, truing up the mating surface for the gasket, and peeling 10 thou or so off the face of the cup.

Later replacement heads (and possibly engines) didn't have the bolt-on caps.

I don't have my parts book here, but you might find a cut-off serial number for the heads with the external caps. I have a gut feeling that your engine or cyl head has been replaced with an early engine or head at some point along the line.

No big deal - probably the biggest difference would be cast iron vs chrome liners and appropriate pistons and rings.

I received some pretty good information regarding engine serial numbers from a Perkins parts dealer and they did a bit of research for me.

The engine serial numbers on the below chart shows where the 7 number sequence stopped and the ones with the letter started. The guy is suppose to let me know what year my engine was built. I'm guessing since your tractor is a 63 and all numbers that mine was built in 64 and matches the year of the tractor.

So now when AGCO parts books shows Used Engine Serial No. 1961449 and Up. I know this is my tractor
