my massey ferguson 180 gas tractor wont lift the semi mounted plow at idle, at full throttle it will lift it 2 inches.I have disassembled the top point spring control assembly at it seems fine no broken parts. Is there anyone that can explain how this unit works? if the spring is compressed when the plow is lifted it seems that the plunger will pull away from the small pin down inside the circular casting but from there i dont know what happens. I want to blame the cylinder that moves the rock shaft, but dont want to go there if not needed, any ideas??

I'd take the side cover off, the one with the dipstick and move the valve by hand. If it now lifts you have a linkage or adjustment problem. If not you probably have a pump problem.

I just took the cover off and moved the lever and it didnt help but when I drop the rpm down the plow drops, so could that because the cylinder is bypassing and letting it drop after the pump got it that far, also bypassing and not lifting all the way up??

While you have the side cover off, check to see if oil is coming down from lift cylinder at top... It may be but not being able to lift most generally is the relief valve on top of pump. (Check to see if oil is being agitated in that area or spraying back out of relief valve. Or the valves and chambers of the pump are worn to point of bypassing with the big load.
Good Luck

oil is moving in the area of the cover that is removed, I will check it again under load to see if oil is coming down from above. Not sure where the relief valve is located, should i be able to see it thru the removed cover area.I have a old book but the pictures are not real definite. I will go back and see what it says on how to check the pump pressure.

Hello Ron, at the moment this sounds like a control spring problem. To test this further remove the top link and attach a chain from the plough to the hinged pin point on the centre housing. You are bypassing the top link connection. Try to lift the plough. If it does lifts then the control spring and its mounting will probably require further attention.

If there is a leak it will show up as low pump pressure. So, no point in checking that until you are sure the relief valve or the cylinder in the lift cover is not allowing the leaking.
One thing I did not add last time: Lower the oil level in the trans to where the relief valve is just showing. It will be safe to run for testing purposes as long as it is on a level surface. If you see oil coming out the relief, then that is the most usual problem. If oil is still above the pistons on the pump yolks and it is bypassing there you will be able to see the bypassing there with a lower oil level.

You just need to keep the oil level at least 1/2 up on the pistons on the pump yolks to prevent galling by running dry.

Well under load with the plow on and high rpm there is quite a bit of oil coming down from above, so i have decided that I am GOING IN remove the cover and remove the assembly that house the cylinder and rock shaft and see what i find. need to clean that area for repaint and restoration.
