Massey 492 front differential

We have a 492 with fwa on it. Using it this weekend it sounded a little noisy. I disengaged the front end and it was quiet so I finished feeding hay and carrying firewood. I got to looking after work today and saw 2 drain plugs, one on the front axel and one in the housing where the drive shaft comes into the front. I pulled the plugs and both were empty. The one on the axel was empty and clean. The one in the housing was empty and metal pieces in there that looked maybe like a metal bushing or shim got ripped apart. I just added universal fluid to see if I could find any leaks and to see if the 2 were linked together somehow as I could only find one fill plug. Sure enough both filled with the same filler plug. After filling it I did not try driving it anymore tonight to see if it made it quieter. My questions are, does anyone know what the thin metal piece are that were in the drain plug and how much damage is done? Can I just continue to use it if it continues to work? I'm thinking universal fluid is better than nothing, but do I need to drain it again and put the correct fluid it and what is the correct fluid? Sorry this is long. Thanks in advance for any help with this matter.

do not use it anymore with out checking it out kind of sounds like the ring and pinon gears are shot how old is this tractor? if ti never leaked it could have been sold new with no oil in it.should have a EP gear oil in it something like 80/90

It is a 2004. I bought it about 3 years ago. It doesn't look like gear teeth in there and there is oil that resembles 80-90. I called the dealer this morning and they said there are a couple discs in there that sounds like they came apart. They said the same thing not to use it any more until it's fixed and if the ring and pinion are good it will save me 1200 in parts. Doesn't sound like it will be a cheap fix though.
