MF85 hydrualic lift problem

I bought a 85 at an auction last week for 1200 and it was running at the auction but since I brought it home I can't get it started. I am waiting for plugs and electronic iginition to come so I can try to start it again, but in the mean time I have another concern.

When I bought it, I saw the 3 point was held up with a rope, so I assumed somethimng was wrong with the hydraulics somewhere. When I got it home, I took off the rope and three point went to half way and stayed there. OK, I thought. Then when I returned in an hour it had fallen all the way down, so now I know there is a hydraulic problem.

My question is , can this be fixed without splitting the tractor? What would be the causes of this that I could look at first?

Trouble shoot then parts NEVER the other way around.
#1 check that you have a good blue/white spark at the center wire of the distributor cap and at all 4 plug were that jumps a 1/4 inch gap or more. Good chance it you do not have that the points simply need to be cleaned up.#2 pull the carb drain plug and make sure you have a good steady flow of gas that will fill a pint jar in under 3 minutes.

Electronic ignition no way I would go that way. I have tractor that have had the same set of point in them for 10 plus years and they keep going. Plus for what it costs for that ignition system I can buy 10 or more sets of points

Best find an owner's manual to understand how the three point works, ESPECIALLY if it has the auxiliary two or three lever valve on the lift cover. If it HAS the valve the left lever is locked back so the three point will work. Just my opinion, but I'd keep the distributor points. At least they can be cleaned if needed when corroded to work again. Not so when the electronic system dies. But what do I know, I prefer Diesel!

It has no auxiliary hydraulics.

The 3 point could be as simple as a clogged up hyd filter or low on oil. Or like on one I worked on a few years back a spring had become unhooked and that caused another part to fall out of place so the 3 point did not work.

If it is something more complex than a filter or oil, can the hydraulic system be worked on without splitting the tractor? Like getting to the pump or replacing the rings on the cylinder?

If the hydraulic pump does need to come out, tractor will need split. Best check everything else out first.

Depends on what is wrong. If the problem is in the lift it self you can pull that with out splitting the tractor. But to pull the lift cover you will need some way to lift it other then by hand unless you are built like the Hulk
