202 Air Filter Housing (scratching head)

Good morning!

The air filter housing (I know a picture is worth 1000 words, but no can do) has a flat top with a center flush opening surrounded with 3/4" louvers. I have not seen anything like it in the pictures or manuals. I thought maybe an add-on, but it seems to have factory mounts.

The lower removable round section has a circular metal fixed 2"ish tube. The top of the tube is about the level of the "oil level" stamping. The tube has 4 holes 1/2" drown from its top There is about 3/4" between the sidewalls of the tube and lower section.

Trying to determine if its the correct filter assembly and how to make it functional so I can then connect it to the pipe coming from the carb.

Thank you for the help

I found a similar looking bottom section, it was from a JD and so I followed that info. That is to fill both sections of the cup. So that done and I used a radiator hose, cut to fit.

Yes those 4 holes are just a sorta baffle, the oil should be the same levelboth inner and outer bowls. If you had/have it all apart, soaking and cleaning the mesh with kerosene and blowing it all clean, sure don't hurt. yep a hose to the carb and Bob's yer uncle mate! In these years, its hart to say what is original, most of what fergie people think is 'wrong' with a- say- MHF50 dash or wiring... are ready to tear out original 'Massey Harris' stuff, that is still good... but not to Harry F people... so if it works, use it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I started my 202 today, first time in a long time... needs a battery bad... I wonder if the guys on here would get me one for Christmas??? Nothing else is wrong with it... this time...

Hi Tony, what year? FEL and or BH?

I try when I can to use parts that match original. No idea who's making them, but I really want to stabilize my new friend and then time to time when I find it, maybe I will get more OEM. But for me I am planning on using it several days per week.

Have a great Sat eve.

I don't know if you have the parts manual for the 202 but here's a picture of the air cleaner for the Continental gas engine.

Thank you Caryc. I used the MF parts finder, the pic you shared is much clearer. Mine does not look anything like the picture. No way to hook a nozzle to the top as the opening is flush and surrounded by slots. The cup has 2 parts and the hose setup I have is very different. I will stick with it for now and change it down the road.

On that hose set up in the picture, the dark colored parts #17 are small pieces of radiator hose. The lighter colored part #16 is a little misleading. It's a metal tube and a lot longer than it looks in the the picture since the picture shows it cut in the middle. It's actually over a foot long.

Mine just had a loader, the back half just rolls, or did- I found a junk and put the pto an hitch parts in it, but at the moment it is running around with the live pto arsend from a 35 diesel. The letter code is the same as yours.
I wouldn't worry about the air filter as long as it works, you might need that power steering to work again.

I have a 2 to 3" hose off the carb to a metal pipe that is more than a foot. One end has a factory bend. No matter how the parts are configured, its not a straight path from the air cleaner housing and the metal pipe. A radiator hose cut in the curve made a great connection. I can't imagine why anyone would make the choice to change from the original oil bath to this oil bath setup, so I suppose it could have been built that way. Thank you

Since I purchased my 202 about a year ago the only thing I did with the air cleaner is clean the bottom cup and refill with clean oil. The oil in it was converted to sludge.

But I have two replacement mesh pieces to put in it. I've just been waiting for the weather to cool off. My air cleaner also has the glass jar at the air intake to catch any heavier particles. I'll try to get at it tomorrow and I'll just remove the whole air cleaner to replace the mesh since it's the easiest way to do it.

I try to take pictures that show the air cleaner out of the tractor and putting in the mesh. I'll post them here for you.

Power steering is on the list for sure, now after driving without it its a lower priority. Mine wasn't working well enough to miss it.

My new friend is still struggling with fuel starvation, the 2 spool leaks a fair amount I get hit with some water now and then, need to tune him up and my rear hydraulics are very week, a lift arm is cracked. bushing, bolts or whatever for the bucket mounts, arm joints and cylinders and gauges. A good ole boy that needs a lot of TLC. In my mind for now, the backhoe does not exist. lol
