Some models the transmission has to be completely out, so the lower shaft can go back, which allows the front lower gear to drop enough to get the top retainer housing out..

By the photo the lower bearing with retainer are out, but the SHAFT needs to go rearward for the GEAR to drop down out of the way. Then the input retainer assembly can be removed on the STRAIGHT six speed transmissions. Twelve speed Multi-Power Don't need the lower gear to drop down for the PTO shaft and retainer to come out, but the MP transmissions DO have to come out to remove the input shaft for clutch pack repair as the input shaft goes out the back only.

Yup, has to come off the diff case, then the lower shaft will go back to allow the gear to drop down. The input retainer housing has a lower rear part that supports the PTO shaft bearing. That's why the gear has to drop down before the retainer will come out..

Thanks for posting the book photos. After checking the Agco parts site I see what the trouble is. The book photos show the 1500/540 PTO driveline, his transmission is the later 1700/540 driveline, and the shaft must go rearward on the later models. If one looks very closely to the lower gear and shaft in his first photo, the gear does not have the internal snap ring like the book photo does. The later 1700/540 shaft has two snap rings that are the same. His shaft has the second ring behind the gear, that's why his shaft has to go back for the gear to drop. A quick check of both transmissions on the Agco site will show how the later shaft is different from how the early model is..
