235/20C 3-point hydraulics quit working today?

I used the tractor to drag a palm tree across the yard today. I used the trailer ball receiver on the three point. When we got to the burn pile, I used the ball mount to back up and push the tree in the middle. I'm pretty sure the hydraulics were working up until I pushed the tree. Now they don't go up. I also used to be able to muve the top piston on the 3 point by hand. Now I can't. I can hear the rear end "whirring" when I try to raise the hydraulics.

Is this all related? Did I break something, or maybe just jam it up?

I'd say something do with the draft control, the top has a spring that compresses that works the draft control. I you bump it hard enough it could have damaged the linkage under the lift cover.

My neighbor showed me his repair manual (waiting for mine in the mail) and he convinced me to pull the cover and take a look. We're thinking that, maybe the dog bone came out when it rolled up over the tree. That mighy have also caused the piston to pop out. I'll be able to look at the draft piston, too, while I have it open. I'm also going to take the opertunity to change the oil and scrape out some of the chocolate milk.

Well... apparently I did something right. And, apparently I did something wrong, too. I took the cover off the tractor. I don't know if it was already like this, or if it's from me yanking on it, but the dog bone was out of the socket when I got the cover off. Everythimg else looked like it was OK, so I changed the fluid, put the dog bone back in, and put it back together. I pushed both levers to the "up" position and started the tractor. The arms started going up! (Yay) So I pushed the levers down and they still went up. They wouldn't go down, so I stopped the tractor. I figure there is only a tube and a lever to line up with something. The tube is obviously in the right place but did I get the lever in the wrong place? Is something else wrong?

Sounds like an incorrectly adjusted control valve to me, or you didn't get the small levers forward of the control valve roller when you put the cover back on.

If I were you I'd also look very carefully at the studs that hold the lift cylinder to the top cover plate (where your seat bolts on)- if any are broken, it'll allow the cylinder to flex down and the rockshaft to drop out. It *should* have been fairly obvious if any were snapped, but I suppose its also possible that it still looked ok.

There is only one lever and I do remember seeing a roller down there. There was a roller towards the rear, and a safety wired nut/bolt combination about 3/4" in front of that. Is the lever supposed to be between the two of them? If so, then that's the problem. I knew the lever went behind something, so I set the cover down, towards the rear of the tractor, then slid it forward into place. I'm guessing that I need to drain some of the oil, pull the side cover, and align the lever between the roller and that bolt as I set everything back down?

I got it working. I'm still not sure why the lift arms wouldn't go up at first, but now they go up AND down. It's important (come to find out) to remove the cover plate (transmission dipstick) and visualize where this lever is going. Here's a picture of the lever in the right place...

I'm not sure. I actually got this part working a couple of days before the manual showed up. I believe other tractors have a fork where I have a lever. With the lever, I don't believe there would be any point in removing the roller. There isn't anything to grab on anything else and break when you pull the lift plate.

It's pretty much standard procedure to remove the side cover, and remove the roller before pulling the top cover (I've seen one where one arms that hold the roller in place get broken off when pulling the top cover without removing the roller first). The you put the roller back in place after the lift cover is back on.

I can see as to where someone could cause that roller to fall out and disappear into the bottom of the tractor. I guess I got lucky.
