Steering box

MF 35 deluxe gas, manual steering.

Lots of "play" in wheel. Moves several inches before any actual change in wheels. So I tore into it today. Found both pitman shafts have damaged teeth. Looks like an expensive fix. I would also replace the shaft assembly and some bearings.
I see the whole complete steering box for sale in a few places. Has anyone gone that route? Or am i better off finding parts to repair mine?

It costs about the same either way you go. The new one I bought is aluminum, and the sector gears are not adjustable like they are on the old boxes. The aluminum one is getting loose already, and I have the weight of a 84" mower on the back of it most of the time so it is a little light on the front. If you have the time, and have the ability rebuild the box you have, and buy every part that can wear.

You may find a good one in salvage yard or parts. Also a friend bought a new one from
A&I for a MF35 and it didn't fit. Bolt holes would not line up. Built in Turkey. He
used the old housing and took new parts out of the A&I. A lot of trouble just to make
it work.

The steering box I got was from India, made by TAFE (Tractor And Farm Equipment), they used to make tractor for MF like the MF235, but its now a TAFE 35DI. They even still make the AD3.152 for their 35DI, and their other models.
