MF35 Perkins glow plug question

Right now my son?s tractor glow plug is wired to come on
when the key is turned to start. To me it would make more
sense to install a push button to operate the glow plug for
several seconds before starting it. Would that be a better set
up for ease of starting?

The MF 35 has a thermostart, not a glowplug. It works a little differently. Assuming you still have the start switch that rotates counter clockwise to first engage the thermostart then the starter, the thermostart will heat up like a glowplug to ignite a small amount of fuel which heats the air going into the manifold. It takes about 10 seconds for the fuel to ignite. When you turn the switch counter clockwise to engage the thermostart, listen very carefully and around the 10 second mark you will hear a little 'whump' as the fuel ignites. Immediately turn the switch further counter clockwise to engage the starter drawing in the hot air.

I see what you?re saying John. We did replace the key switch so I?ll have to study that a bit and see if I can wire it to work that way. Thanks

If it is wired up like JDD's schematic, then you must have a Standard Motors 4, With 4 glow plugs... and yeah.... turning the switch backwards and holding it there is the way to was done. Even my 70's Kubota is wired like that. It might be the least amount of work your fingers will do that day. Trying to modernize that wiring might create yourself a big can of worms...

The key switch we bought wouldn?t work the way I?d like so I picked up a push button switch and we installled that under the console. It works perfectly. We even heard the whump at about 10 seconds and it fired right up. Tomorrow is ?drive your tractor to school day? so my son is ready to do just that. 🙂
