Odd tachometer drive for a 135?

I recently bought a new (to me) what appears to be a mid-70's 135 - yellow variety. I'm trying to get it back in shape and I've made it to the tachometer. The tach was busted when I got it and it didn't have a tach cable. The threads were broken off the tach drive plate. I made a new threaded piece on the lathe and pressed it in to the existing plate. When I hooked everything up and tried to put in the air cleaner, I saw why it was broken. This tractor has an air cleaner that is mounted laterally - under the battery - and it seems the normal way is to have it mounted lengthwise. There is no room for the cable and it's getting kinked. I'm trying to upload a picture. I don't think it's working.

Was this tractor supposed to have the cable mounted to the generator? Is there a right hand drive out there? Is there a cable with a curve in it to clear the air cleaner? Should I just change to the other air cleaner? Any other ideas?

First off, what engine? Continental gas ran the tach cable to a generator gearbox. Perkins three cylinder gas and diesel ran the tach from the rear of the engine camshaft.

It's a perkins diesel. I think I can't post the picture because the file is too big. I took the picture with my phone. I'll have to figure out something else.

The 20C industrial/235 ag tractor has the air cleaner mounted like you described (the 135 didn't have the air cleaner mounted that way).
For the 20C/235 they have right angle adaptor for the tach cable drive.

Hmmm... Dangit. That part doesn't seem to be available anywhere on the internet. I may need to make one from a drive adapter for a 265 or a Ford or something.

Well, I mowed for about 7 hours today and I can report that the tach cable works. So does the hour meter - backwards. The tach probably works, too, pressed firmly against its stop at "0."

I didn't find the drive listed, but I did find one listed as MS39130-9 for a good price. It says it's reverse drive (good) but it has a drive ratio of 3 1/2:1. For the price, it's worth trying to change the gears.

You have the clockwise tach that's used for the Continental 4 cyl gas. The tach you need for the Perkins runs counter-clockwise.

I have two options coming - both were
cheap and both should give me a working
solution. I have a gearbox coming that,
I think, will reverse the direction of
the cable. I also found a used tach that
turns in the direction of my cable. The
problems are that 1) the gearbox is a 3
1/2:1, which will throw the values off
and 2) the cable has such a kink in it,
it won't drive the new tach for a very
long time.

Coincidentally, the new tach has 40
hours on it - in the wrong direction.

I guess I figured out how to post a picture (or at least make it small enough to post) here's the tach drive repair I made along with the kinked cable.

I'm working on a MF240 with the 3.152 diesel that I think has the same air cleaner setup, I'll take look, and post a picture if its the same setup.
