Replacement Wheel

I'm looking for advice on how to put a new rim on a Massey Ferguson Model 35 Deluxe (TO-35). Not sure what year it is, but the engine serial number is Z134 707081. The tractor belonged to my grandfather and I used to drive it on the farm when I was younger and I've recently been able to glom onto it. One of the rear wheels was rotted out (leaky ballast) and I need to replace the rim in order to get it up and running again. I was able to order a 12x24 replacement rim that is the same size as the original, but the loops on the new rim don't line up w/ the holes on the old center plate -- the loops on the rim are set at about a half-inch larger radius than the holes on the center hub. My brother is lobbying to build an adapter ring to tie everything together, but I have to believe that there's a way to do this w/o breaking out the cutting torch. Can anyone offer any suggestions or advice? I'll post a photo once I sort out the mechanism for doing so (I'm new to this forum).

Thanks for your help.

Ron

OK -- here's a photo of the rim and center hub. In this image we've got one of the clippy things from the original wheel on the one bolt, but we've since removed that as it doesn't serve any purpose. Still, you can see how the rest of the holes don't line up when the one bolt is in place.

You have the wrong wheel, the centers on your tractor are not for the loop type wheel you bought. You need wheel part number 182618M2. Your wheel centers clamp to the wheel. The clamps are part number 182619M1.

It maybe easier to find a pair of loop wheels, and centers from another tractor (unless you are tying to keep it all original). MF 35, 135, 235, and Ford 2000, and 3000 rear wheels should bolt on also. The centers have a 8 bolt on 8" bolt center. The original clamp rim will probably have found used/salvage.

Show us a picture of the old rim. I will bet it is a '2 ring' industrial style, like what is in PT's drawing- not the generic 6 loop you bought here. Can you bring it back? An 'adapter ring' needs a pretty big plate of steel... just to cut 99% of it off...

Thank you all for your prompt replies -- this is very helpful. I'd naively assumed that the loop-style wheel was a direct replacement for the original -- just using bolts instead of the clamps. Live & learn.

I'm not particularly interested in keeping the tractor original -- I just want to make it reliably functional for the minimal cost. The loop style wheels look like a better design to me than the original, but the original worked well for 50 years. If both approaches are "reliably functional" then it is just a matter of cost.

Ptfarmer's diagram accurately depicts the original setup. The original wheel was pretty well rusted out and the attempts at repair may have done more damage than good. It is pretty much done for and I don't have a good photo of it to share.

I'm not seeing anyone on line that stocks a 182618M2 wheel, so it looks like used/salvage may be the only option. If I go to a set of wheels and centers off of another tractor then what's the best source? I'm new to the tractor world, so I don't know all the ins and outs. Are there tractor wrecking yards that have this stuff or do I haunt Craigslist? The size and weight makes shipping seem unlikely, particularly if the salvage wheels have tires on them.

(quoted from post at 11:51:18 12/02/16) Google 24" Double Bevel Wheel and you will see
them. Little pricey new but you might find a good
used one at a tractor salvage yard.

And there they are! I was looking for the specific MF part number and not finding much, but the more general "24 double bevel wheel" turns up lots of options. These are common enough that they'll fit even if they're not specifically for an MF tractor? Having already purchased one incorrect wheel I'm getting a little more cautious...

Thanks for all your help. With the hints on how to search for the right part I found just what I needed and had it shipped to me for (what seemed to be) a reasonable price. The wheel is now back together and ready for the tire to be mounted. I still have a bit of work to do, but I think the tricky bits are behind me.

If you are still there cloudcap, I have the same tractor with the same issue. What option did you pursue, the loop style rim or double bevel rim? Where did you purchase rims/part number and have you reassembled already??

Since I already had the new-style "loop" rim I didn't want to buy yet another one (even though I was now able to find the proper part), so I ended up buying a newer wheel hub to work w/ the newer rim. The new hub that works w/ the new "loop style" rim was a "Used Massey Ferguson TO30 Disc Wheel Center 186186M1 Disc hub for TO-35 to use with a loop-style replacement rim". I purchased it from Dave Hiebert @ Mike's Equipment Company ([email protected]) and he was extremely helpful and responsive.
