Gas vs Diesel again

This MF 50 is the first gas tractor I have had in about 20 years. Used a MF165 for that time, before it I used an Allis-Chalmers WD45. Both had loaders, MF50 does not, wish it did. Sure is nice to run out and start the gasoline tractor when its cold, versus going and plugging in a block heater 2 hours before use. However the trade off is in money laid out for fuel to do the same amount of work. I believe the gas does about half the work per gallon the diesel did.

I grew up around both gasoline and diesel powered tractors. We had a 3010, 3020, 4020 (John Deere's), and a 450, H, and 806 (Farmall's). I was about 9 years old when we purchased our first diesel powered tractor for the farm. In the day when we were using the 4020 John Deere and the 806 Farmall for our big two tractors, they both would burn around 8 gallons an hour when plowing. As my dad mentioned, the 4020 would run around 4 hours before needing the fuel tank re-filled. The 806 and the 3010 were the ones that left. The other 4 are still around. Since replacing the carburetor on the 3020, that tractor is thirstier than ever! The prior carburetor was comparatively "stingy" on gasoline, but this one, I think will burn up to 7 gallons an hour under a hard load. Never thought it was possible to burn that much gasoline through a 3020 Deere. I just replaced a tired out 656 Farmall with a 86 Hydro for my yard tractor. The diesel engine on the 86 Hydro is rather cold blooded and it takes a minimum of 2 hours with the block heater plugged in to start it in the winter. I wouldn't want another tractor on my snow blower, though, unless it was a gasoline powered hydro, but finding one that is not "used up" is pretty difficult, since the last of the hydro's are over 30 years old. For a yard tractor, I would prefer gasoline, but again, looking at the age of the tractors I can justify, I cannot be picky. In an emergency situation, I would prefer to have the ability to go out and start that tractor up at a moment's notice.
