What model to buy?

I've currently got a '63 Ford 4000 (4 cylinder gas) with a front end loader. This loader is not one of the modern types that are easily removed. To remove this would take two people the better part of a day. In any case, I am sick of always having to deal with the loader frame anytime I've got to work on the engine - or anything else for that matter. It's always in the way and I get tired of bashing my head! It's time to replace this tractor and I was wondering what model Massey Ferguson would be an equivalent to the Ford. I'm looking for something in the 35 to 45 HP range that would have one of those removable type loaders. It can be either gas or diesel, I'm not picky. Not knowing anything about Massey tractors, I figured that this would be a good place to start. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

rockepg - I would want both the PTO and 3-point hitch, as well as the loader. I've started looking at Massey Ferguson tractors to
see what would work, but since it seems that there are dozens of models to choose from, I really don't know where to start.

To remove the entire frame is a pain, no doubt.
But to remove the loader arms and bucket is just four pins and
two quick connect hoses unless you have a jungle gym style loader.
It would be the same on similar era Fergy's in my experience.
Do you have a model number of or a picture of the loader?

Your 4000 supposedly had 55 hp, a 135 has around 45 hp, if you need more power a 165 has about 58 hp. Either one are good tractors, get one with the Perkins diesel, parts are easier for those engines (they were built from 1965-1975). The 1960-1965 35, and 65 are also good tractors (the 135, and the 165 are pretty much the same as the 35, and 65 tractors, just different sheet metal, and few minor updates).

I have a MF135 diesel with a 5' loader on it running off the internal hydraulics. It would be better to have a front mounted pump for the loader, but it works fine. It is still easy to get to any part of the engine with the loader on it, but the bucket and arms can be removed easily with just four pins and 2 quick disconnect hoses. Takes about 5 mins. at most. With any type of tractor-loader that is not a 4 wheel drive you will need to hang a heavy weight off of the back for traction with a full bucket, even if the tires are loaded. The 135 diesel engine is easy to start even in very cold temperatures and is very fuel efficient. You can run a 6' mower, a 6' brush mower, a rotary tiller, etc. It just runs and runs. Good luck!

robilmichael - thanks for those pictures and the advice! That looks like it would be a perfect replacement for my 4000. Mine has a front mounted hydraulic pump, so that would be something that I would want on a Massey. Is it possible to retrofit a front mount on your MF135? Once you remove the bucket and arms, what exactly is left on the tractor - is the frame still in place?

This may not be an option but why not keep your Ford with the loader and just buy another tractor to do your non-loader chores? I have a 1957 Ford 801 with loader but use my MF 35 or Ford 600 to do non-loader chores. As for a Massey that is equivalent to Ford's, the MF 35 gas is about 35 horses and has plenty of strength to do what I need done. It is a very good, dependable tractor. Not to big and not to small.
