massey ferguson tachometer problem

I have a 62 MF50 with perkins diesel. issue is with the tach, it does not function. I have replaced the tach gauge and cable. still not working. it looks like there is an adaptor missing behind the cover. my
cable is the square end cable but the part on the engine has a big slot in it. there is also a gap from where the engine side slot is at and the threaded part the cable goes to, looks like a part is missing.
If anyone can help me with this, I would be very appreciative.

Thank you,

Austin

Make sure you have the right tachometer. There are clockwise and anti-clockwise driven tachometers. I have an MF 35 Perkins diesel 3 cyl engine which if I remember correctly needs and anti-clockwise tach.

Thank you, I do have the ccw tach. the cable does not even touch the weird slotted part, I purchased another cable that I thought might be it, but still no luck. is there a special cable with a slot on the engine side? if there is, do you know what part number it is? I have search nearly every configuration from multiple models at agcopartsbooks with no success.

The part on the end of the camshaft is part #735889M1. The inside of that part should be square, where the tach cable goes in. Maybe yours is wallowed out? Are you certain you have the correct cable? It should be part # 1754943M91. It is 27- 29/32" long. The whole cable assembly is 506334M91. Hope this helps.

the slotted part on the engine side looks uniform on the inside. it is round. it looks like a male end adaptor is needed to fit into the slot, I could certainly be wrong.

It should pull out. The only question I have with ptfarmer's diagram is that it shows a 4 bolt cover, yours is a 3 hole. I have to wonder if yours fell out when you took the cover off or was it always missing?? The diagram I used for the part numbers above did not show a connector.
This site also sells parts and it lists the 3 hole gasket, tach cable, and drive gear but not the "connector" shown above.
A call to a MF dealer should get you in the right direction.

Why the parts diagram shows a 4 bolt cover for the I don't know.

They all have the same part numbers except for the connector drive for the late production 150's

There is a drive adaptor as shown between the cam and cable. I recall that the dealer part was too small or somehow off and so I had my machinist make me a new one once I had the part to copy. It was a long time ago. I doubt that this part, or end of the tach drive has any bearing on the tach needle direction so I wouldn't worry about that.

I purchased 2 cables here, and called the dealer. dealer said he knew what I was talking about but could not place the part.

You might have to call some other dealers that have a better understanding of their parts supply.
Keep trying, there are a few good dealers that will probably have your part or can get it quickly.
