Engine swap--MF 165 and F-40?

I want to pull my engine for a rebuild, seal oil leaks, etc. I've found a running but very rough MF 165 locally that I'd like to use the engine from as a spare.

Any thoughts on interchangeability? Don't know yet if the parts tractor is gas or diesel. My F40 is Continental Z134, has been a great engine and great tractor.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

If the 165 runs/drives I'd be using it as is rather than trying to swap engines around. Unless the F-40 has sentimental value I'd keep the 165, and sell the F-40 since parts for the 165 are a bit easier to find. That's just me.

PTfarmer, thnx. No special sentimental value for my F40 but it's been a remarkably reliable and willing workhorse. Has FEL which is mainly how I use it. The 165 is extremely rough based on the photos. I'll evaluate in person tomorrow see what my eyes tell me. I'm generally forgiving where cosmetics are concerned//so long as my machines do what they're supposed to I'm fine. They won't win any beauty contests. Note--the 165 has been parked for roughly five yrs without being run.

....I've seen the tractor now. At a public auction it might bring a little better than scrap value. Very rough. Been kept in a cow pasture and the animals have been beating it up pretty bad. It has a pair of very heavy rear wheel weights--maybe 200 lbs or more each. Lots of wires pulled out, distributor cap knocked off and broken. Nothing that can't be fixed but will take a lot of time. Not the right motor for my tractor so I'm not interested.

If you are in the US I think the TO35 uses the same Z134 engine as the F-40. The F-40 is pretty much a TO35 except for the front axle, steering, and sheet metal.

If the front of the transmission looks like this

You can use a Z134 from a MF35, MF50, and the early MF135, or the Z145 from the later MF135, and MF150 it should be a direct bolt in.

You could even swap in a Perkins 3.152 gas, or diesel, some things like the fuel tank, throttle linkage, and few other little things maybe a little different. A few little changes/modification, and they would work.

Thanks for the suggestions. Apparently the Perkins diesel is the preferred motor for this tractor, would like to have one. Can't complain abt the continental except that it's leaking quite a bit of oil from the rear. Your photo of transmission is helpful as I'll be looking at that when I split the tractor to replace rear crank seal and whatever else needs to be done. I'll get the tractor manuals before getting into the guts of this thing--also have FEL to move out of the way, not a job for a Sunday afternoon. Thanks again and happy tractoring!

After looking at some pictures of F-40's the transmission does have the starter pocket that was added on as seen on the upper right hand drivers side (same side of the intake, and exhaust manifold on the Z134 engine) so the Z134, Z145, and Perkins 3.152 engines will bolt up to your transmission case (the Perkins has the starter on the opposite side of engine than the continental.

Thanks---that's a big help to have the photos. It's a thing that I would easily overlook, the position of the starter, when looking at an engine replacement. Then get it home and find it won't mate up with the transmission. I'll post pics of my tractor when I have a minute. BTW I am in USA--Maryland over on the right coast. Thanks again for your time and help, Gary
